Taylor Swift’s 12th studio album ‘The Life of a Showgirl’ debuted on Friday to midnight Target runs, theatre-release parties and glitzy pop-ups that lit up the US, from New York to Los Angeles.According to initial reports from data tracking firm Luminate, on first day of release, the set sold 2.7 million copies in traditional album sales (physical and digital purchases). It marks Swift’s biggest week ever, and the second-largest sales week for any album since 1991. The only larger sales week was registered by ‘Adele’s 25,’ which sold 3.4 million copies in its first week in 2015. The album also set a record for most vinyl album copies sold in a single week, with 1.2 million. The last record, was also set by Swift 2024 with the debut of her album ‘The Tortured Poets’ Department,’ which sold 859,000 copies on vinyl in the same frame.Along with the album, Swift also released a concert film, featuring personal reflections. ‘The Official Release Party of a Showgirl’ was the highest grossing picture in US and Canadian cinemas this weekend, raking in $33 million in ticket sales. The picture generated an additional $13 million internationally, according to AMC Entertainment Holdings Inc. The film played at all 540 AMC theatres in the US for three days, ending after Sunday. AMC aired the show in Mexico, Canada and across Europe.It’s the second Swift picture released by AMC. In 2023, AMC’s ‘Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour concert’ film generated $261.7 million at the global box office, making it the most successful concert film of all time. That picture opened to $93.2 million in the US and Canada.The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) said last week in a post on Instagram that Swift is now the first and only female artist in history to surpass 100 million album sales. She has sold 105 million albums to date and is sixth on the list of most albums sold after music legends like The Beatles, Garth Brooks, Elvis Presley, Eagles and Led Zeppelin.Bloomberg Billionaire’s Index estimated her wealth grew another billion dollars over the past two years, now putting her worth at $2.1 billion.
