Sheikh Abdulaziz Al-Sheikh’s death signifies the loss of a pivotal figure in Saudi Arabia’s religious landscape.

Sheikh Abdulaziz bin Abdullah Al-Sheikh, the esteemed Grand Mufti of Saudi Arabia, has passed away at the age of 82. The Royal Court announced his death on September 23, 2025, marking the end of an era in Saudi Arabia’s religious leadership.

A life dedicated to Islamic scholarship and leadership

Born on November 30, 1940, in Mecca, Sheikh Abdulaziz Al-Sheikh was a prominent Islamic scholar and a leading figure in Saudi Arabia’s religious establishment. He was appointed Grand Mufti in 1999, succeeding Sheikh Abdulaziz Bin Baz. Throughout his tenure, he played a pivotal role in shaping the Kingdom’s religious discourse and was known for his commitment to Islamic jurisprudence.Sheikh Abdulaziz Al-Sheikh was a member of the Al ash-Sheikh family, a lineage with deep roots in Islamic scholarship. He began his religious education at an early age, memorizing the Quran and studying Islamic jurisprudence under notable scholars. His academic journey led him to become a professor at Imam Muhammad ibn Saud University, where he imparted his knowledge to future generations of Islamic scholars.

Condolences from Saudi leadership

In response to his passing, King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman extended their heartfelt condolences to the family of the deceased, the Saudi people, and the broader Islamic community. The Royal Court conveyed these sentiments, reflecting the nation’s collective mourning. The funeral prayer for Sheikh Abdulaziz Al-Sheikh is scheduled to take place later today at Imam Turki bin Abdullah Mosque in Riyadh. This mosque holds significant religious importance and has been the site for numerous state funerals.

Contributions to Islamic scholarship

Throughout his tenure, Sheikh Abdulaziz Al-Sheikh was instrumental in interpreting Sharia law and issuing fatwas on various legal and societal matters. He emphasized the importance of unity within the Muslim community and worked towards bridging divides among different Islamic sects. His leadership was characterized by a commitment to preserving Islamic traditions while addressing contemporary issues facing the Muslim world.Sheikh Abdulaziz Al-Sheikh’s influence extended beyond Saudi Arabia. The Grand Mufti of Egypt, Dr. Shawky Allam, expressed his condolences, offering prayers for the deceased and his family.
