Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday launched a scathing attack on Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), comparing Bihar’s current development under the NDA government with what he described as the “lantern rule” of Lalu Yadav-led party.

Prime Minister Modi’s remarks came as he launched the Mukhyamantri Mahila Rojgar Yojana for Bihar via video conferencing. During the address, the Prime Minister stated that Bihar women suffered a lot due to corruption and lawlessness when the RJD was in power in the state.

Highlighting the image of a transformed Bihar, PM Modi asserted that women in the state have now been empowered and infrastructure has improved, making their lives easier. The Prime Minister referred to lantern, RJD’s party symbol, to underscore what he claimed was a period marked by “lawlessness and corruption.”

“…Today, our daughters are flying fighter planes. But we must not forget the days when the RJD was in power in Bihar. It was the rule of the lantern. During that time, the mothers, sisters, and women of Bihar bore the brunt of lawlessness and corruption,” PM Modi said.

“Back then, when major roads in Bihar were in ruins, who suffered the most? When such difficulties arise, we all know that our women are the first to bear the brunt of these hardships,” he added.

The BJP leader cited examples of pregnant women unable to reach hospitals and a general lack of access to timely medical care as symbols of that era’s governance failures.

“Pregnant women couldn’t reach hospitals on time. In critical situations, they couldn’t receive proper treatment. Our government has worked day and night to help you overcome these difficult circumstances…,” he remarked.

He stated that the Centre and the state government are working for the service, prosperity and self-respect of women in the state. An initiative of the state government, the scheme is aimed at making women Aatmanirbhar by providing them with seed capital to start self-employment ventures and livelihood activities of their choice.

“A brother is happy when his sister is healthy, happy, and her family is financially strong. Today, your brothers Narendra and Nitish are working for your seva, samriddi and swabhiman (service, prosperity and self-respect). With the help of the scheme, my sisters in Bihar can open utensils, cosmetics, toys and stationery shops and can take part in animal husbandry,” he added.

Mukhyamantri Mahila Rojgar Yojana Launched

As PM Modi launched the scheme, Rs 10,000 each was directly transferred into the bank accounts of 75 lakh women across Bihar, totalling Rs 7,500 crore. Addressing the gathering via video conferencing, the Prime Minister said women can start their businesses with the help of the amount received.

Under the scheme, each beneficiary gets an initial grant of Rs 10,000 via Direct Benefit Transfer, with the possibility of additional financial support of up to Rs 2 lakh in subsequent phases. The assistance can be utilised in areas of the beneficiary’s choice, including agriculture, animal husbandry, handicrafts, tailoring, weaving, and other small-scale enterprises.
