Watch: Trying to take selfie, man falls 200 metres from mountain in China; dies

A tourist died while attempting to take a selfie on Mount Nama in Sichuan province, China. The man, identified as Hong, was part of a hiking group when the accident occurred on September 25.31-year-old Hong unclipped his safety harness to take a photo on the snowy mountaintop, reports the Mirror. He slipped near a crevasse and fell 200 metres (650 feet) down the mountain. Fellow climbers watched in horror as he scrambled to regain control but could not stop his fall. Footage shared on social media shows the moment he tumbled down the 5,588-metre peak.Emergency services rushed to the scene, but Hong was pronounced dead. His body was transported to Gongga Mountain Town. His cousin said it was his first attempt to hike the mountain.Officials from the Kangding municipal education and sports bureau said the group had not reported their plans or obtained climbing permits. A local official said, “If the crampons had not been removed and the rope had not been undone, this might not have happened.” Personnel from the Sichuan Mountaineering Association confirmed that Hong was not a professional. Police are investigating the incident.
