West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday accused the “double-engine” government in Tripura of supporting violence over the BJP’s alleged attack on the TMC’s party office in the northeastern state.
A day after the party office in Agartala was ransacked, a five-member delegation of the Trinamool Congress (TMC) arrived in the state capital but alleged that it was not allowed to leave the airport.
The TMC members sat on a dharna at the airport, alleging that the vehicles they arranged to pick them up had been threatened not to drop them off.

“You can see what is going on in Tripura. A five-member delegation of our ministers, MPs and MLAs was sent there. But they were stopped at the airport. Even their taxi is not allowed, they were told not to come…” Banerjee said. “I told them to start walking (to the Agartala TMC office), so they tried to leave on bikes but even that was not allowed. If they are not allowed to go even on foot, I will go there myself.”
Banerjee alleged that the BJP government in Tripura lies about the TMC, when they themselves promote violence and “state-sponsored terror”.
“…You have a double-engine government in Tripura. First, Abhishek Banerjee’s vehicle was vandalised. Where was all advice then? When Dola Sen’s vehicle was attacked, Sushmita Dev’s vehicle was attacked, MPs’ vehicle was attacked, journalists’ vehicle was attacked, nothing was done…they lie about the TMC and support violence…” she said.
Trinamool MP Sushmita Dev, who is at the airport, said she was shocked when she arrived in Agartala to know that the vehicles they had arranged for were not available to pick them up. She alleged the BJP’s “DNA has violence, dictatorship, and anarchy”.

“A delegation of AITC, consisting of three sitting MPs and a cabinet minister of Bengal arrived today in Agartala because yesterday our office was violently attacked, our posters were torn, our property was damaged. I am shocked that we have come to Tripura from Kolkata today, all the cars that we had arranged for our pickup to take us to our office for a press meet have been intimidated; they have been put under pressure and right now we are without any vehicle…” she told news agency ANI. “I am not surprised because BJP’s DNA has violence, dictatorship and anarchy. Today, to attack any party’s office is against the basic tenets of democracy. It’s a murder of democracy. We will not stand for it. Car or no car, we are going to walk to our office.”

“Our AITC delegation has reached here. Three sitting MPs, a cabinet minister, a former MP are part of the delegation. The double-engine government in Tripura has created an atmosphere here that we are unable to exit the airport. Drivers of our vehicles have been threatened so that they do not pick us up or drop us off at the office. This is the failure of the Tripura government and police administration that we have to stage a sit-in protest here…” said TMC MP Sayani Ghosh.
Addressing a press conference at the Trinamool Bhavan in Kolkata, West Bengal minister Shashi Panja said the TMC delegation left for Tripura to meet party workers and assess the situation on the ground following the attack, which took place at Banamalipur in Agartala that is the home constituency of former Tripura Chief Minister Biplab Deb.
“There is an intolerant and violent BJP government in Tripura. The incident that occurred on Monday (October 7) demonstrates how those who claim to protect democracy are behaving otherwise. The video evidence is clear,” Panja said.
Panja alleged that the vandalism took place “in the presence of police”, which stood as “mute spectators”. “This is state-sponsored political terrorism. There is no democracy left in Tripura. The police were standing there, watching as our party office was ransacked. The same Banamalipur where Biplab Deb once contested has now become a symbol of state terror,” she said.
