Buildings damaged, power outages: Heavy rains trigger floods and landslides in Mexico, 28 killed — Key points

The heavy rains in central and southeastern Mexico caused the flood, triggering landslides, damaging homes and highways, and leaving at least 28 people dead, authorities said Friday. Videos on social media from different parts of the affected areas showed streets turned into rivers carrying away vehicles and houses almost completely covered in water. In one of the videos, a floating restaurant is being dramatically swept away by raging floodwaters in Tuxpan, Veracruz, Mexico. What we all need to know:

Several schools, hospitals damaged

One of the hardest-hit areas was the central state of Hidalgo, where 16 deaths were reported, according to state Interior Secretary Guillermo Olivares Reyna. At least 1,000 homes, 59 hospitals and clinics, and 308 schools suffered damage in the state due to landslides and rivers overflowing their banks. Seventeen of the state’s 84 municipalities were without electricity, he said. Mexico deployed 8,700 military personnel to assist the population. In neighbouring Puebla state, nine people died and 13 were missing, according to Gov. Alejandro Armenta. He requested help from the federal govt to rescue 15 people, including some children, who were stranded on rooftops by floodwaters. He estimated around 80,000 people were affected by the heavy rains and said a gas pipeline was ruptured by a landslide. In the Gulf coast state of Veracruz, two people died, including a police officer, Gov. Rocío Nahle said. Approximately 5,000 homes were damaged and the Navy evacuated nearly 900 people to shelters. The city of Poza Rica was one of the hardest hit by river flooding.

Authorities cut electricity

Earlier, authorities cut the electricity in the area. The heavy rainfall also caused power outages affecting more than 320,000 users and damage to almost 1,000 kilometres of roads in six states, authorities said.

Mexico rain history

Mexico has been hit by particularly heavy rains in 2025, with a rainfall record set in the capital, Mexico City.Tropical Storm Raymond remained off the country’s Pacific coast as of Saturday, bringing heavy rainfall as it moved north. Damage from the storm was reported in the states of Chiapas, Guerrero, Oaxaca and Michoacán. The US National Hurricane Centre expected Raymond to hit the southern part of Baja California on the weekend.
