A video from Ayodhya showing people collecting leftover oil from earthen lamps (diyas) after the grand Deepotsav celebrations has sparked political reactions, with Samajwadi Party (SP) chief Akhilesh Yadav and the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) accusing the BJP-led Uttar Pradesh government of ignoring the ground reality of poverty and inflation.

Sharing the video on X Monday, Akhilesh Yadav wrote, “The truth is, these are the scenes… not the sights that people showed and then left.”

सच तो ये दृश्य हैं… वो नज़ारा नहीं जिन्हें दिखाकर लोग चले गये।रोशनी के बाद का ये अंधेरा अच्छा नहीं। pic.twitter.com/k35h4rHczu

The SP leader’s post came just a days after the state government celebrated a record-breaking Diwali event in Ayodhya, lighting over 26 lakh diyas.

The AAP also shared the same video from its official handle, saying it exposed the gap between the state’s claims and the people’s condition.

“These are the scenes from Ayodhya after Deepotsav that were not shown. These scenes reveal the reality of those claims in which the BJP government talks about reducing inflation and lifting millions of families out of poverty,” the party said.

pic.twitter.com/rzxh1Z5yLW

It remains unclear when or by whom the video was recorded, but it has been widely shared online, triggering fresh political debate in the wake of the grand event.

On Sunday, Ayodhya hosted the ninth edition of Deepotsav, with the city glowing under 26,17,215 earthen lamps, setting two new Guinness World Records — one for the largest display of oil lamps, and another for the most people performing ‘aarti’ simultaneously (2,128 participants).

The event, organised by the UP Department of Tourism and the Ayodhya administration, was verified by Guinness representatives using drones to count the lamps. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath received the award certificates from officials during the event.
