In a significant move aimed at easing financial burdens on motorists and promoting road safety, Sharjah Police have cancelled over 7,000 traffic violations that are more than 10 years old, benefiting 284 individuals so far. This initiative is part of a decision by the Sharjah Executive Council to support community stability and encourage compliance with traffic laws.

Sharjah’s traffic fine cancellation policy explained

Traffic violations that are older than 10 years qualify for cancellation under this scheme. To benefit from the cancellation, applicants are required to pay a fee of AED 1,000 per vehicle. However, certain humanitarian and special exemptions to this fee exist. These include cases where the vehicle owner has passed away, the owner has been living outside the country continuously for at least 10 years, or the vehicle is abandoned and the owner cannot be traced. Individuals who meet these conditions can apply for cancellation through Sharjah Police Traffic and Licensing Service Centres or via the official Sharjah Police online portal, making the process accessible and organized.To promote timely payment of fines, Sharjah Police also offers structured discounts:

Within 60 days of violation 35% Fine, impoundment period, and impound fees
After 60 days up to 1 year 25% Fine only

Traffic violations covered under the policy

The cancellation of traffic violations in Sharjah applies broadly to all categories of offenses that are at least 10 years old. This includes common violations such as speeding, illegal parking, running red lights, using mobile phones while driving, not wearing seat belts, as well as other minor infractions. The policy does not specify exclusion of any particular infraction types within this timeframe, thereby offering widespread relief to motorists who have accumulated old fines.Sharjah Police emphasize that this cancellation initiative is carefully targeted and should not be confused with a blanket amnesty. It provides significant financial relief to motorists burdened by longstanding fines by wiping those violations and also removing the associated black points from driver records. This removal helps improve motorists’ prospects regarding insurance premiums and vehicle registration processes. Additionally, the initiative encourages ongoing compliance with traffic laws and road safety. Authorities urge residents to utilize the available discount schemes on more recent fines to avoid penalties and maintain a good driving record.

Motorists wishing to benefit from this scheme need to follow these steps:

  • Verify eligible violations via Sharjah Police online service or in person.
  • Prepare relevant documents: Emirates ID, vehicle registration card, proof of residence if requested.
  • Visit any Traffic and Licensing Service Centre or access the online portal.
  • Pay the cancellation fee unless exempted.
  • Receive official confirmation of cancelled fines for personal records and insurance purposes.

Sharjah Police encourage all drivers to check their records regularly, make use of discounts, and prioritize safety and law adherence. This approach sets a positive example of balancing enforcement with empathy in traffic management, reinforcing government’s commitment to community welfare, and practical solutions for motorists.
