Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Saturday said he may reconsider his earlier decision not to contest the 2028 Assembly elections if the Congress party felt his participation would strengthen its prospects.

Speaking at the News18 Rising Karnataka Summit, Siddaramaiah said, “I had said I won’t contest in the 2028 elections. But all my friends are saying I should contest in 2028 because it will help the party. I haven’t decided on it.”

Addressing questions on the reported power tussle in the state, he said, “What the high command says is final. The high command, 3-4 months back, asked for a reshuffle. I said let us do it after we finish 2.5 years in office. Now, if high command gives permission, we will do it.”

The Chief Minister also made it clear that he is not interested in national politics, saying, “I don’t want to do politics at the national level.” He reiterated that he would abide by the high command’s decision on any leadership change, underlining his continued commitment to party discipline.

The Chief Minister further said he would continue to serve “as long as the people’s blessings remain,” highlighting his intent to be active in state politics and lead as long as public support endures.

CM Siddaramaiah’s son Yathindra’s remark had earlier stirred a debate after he said his father was in the “fag end” of his political career and appeared to hint at Public Works Minister Satish Jarkiholi as a possible successor.

The Chief Minister, however, clarified the statement and said that his son’s comments were being misinterpreted and that he was referring only to an ideological successor.

Siddaramaiah said that his son did not name anyone as his successor. “What can I do if his statement is twisted? I asked Yathindra what comment he made. He told me that he only spoke of him (Satish Jarkiholi) as an ideological successor, not as the next CM.”
