How UAE is implementing yoga as a sport

Yoga’s rise in the United Arab Emirates has extended far beyond wellness studios and mass-participation events. According to The National, UAE is now formalising yoga as a competitive sport, a move that reflects the UAE’s strengthening cultural partnership with India and the influence of its large Indian diaspora. By hosting international competitions, integrating yoga into sports policy, and preparing regulatory structures, the UAE aims to position yogasana not only as a lifestyle but as a recognised sporting discipline.

The big picture

More than 4.3 million Indians reside in the UAE, shaping the country’s cultural and social landscape. Indian films, festivals, and food are already deeply embedded in the Emirates, and yoga continues that blend of cultural exchange.Turning yoga into a sport adds new institutional recognition, transforming a traditional practice into a structured competition. It also aligns with India’s campaign to globalise yoga.

Driving the news

The UAE’s intentions became clear in August 2025 when Fujairah hosted the 6th Asian Yogasana Championship. The event brought together 160 athletes from 16 nations and marked the UAE’s biggest step in showcasing yogasana as a competitive sporting field. The UAE Yoga Committee, under the Ministry of Sports and the UAE Sports for All Federation, is now developing a national framework to support the move. Plans include:

  • Creating and adopting formal competition rules
  • Training Emirati referees, coaches and officials
  • Introducing yoga into school and youth sports systems
  • Expanding participation through major national events

The International Day of Yoga this year attracted more than 30,000 participants at over 35 venues across the Emirates, demonstrating yoga’s growing popularity and public appeal.

It supports a model of cooperation built not only on economics, but shared traditions and identities.Social cohesionIndians form the UAE’s largest expatriate community. Recognising yoga boosts inclusion and acknowledges their cultural contribution.Sports diversificationThe UAE has invested heavily in building a global sports profile. Yoga expands its portfolio into emerging wellness-driven competitive fields.Together these advantages deepen cooperation between the two nations and expand the role of culture in global partnerships.

Historical context

Yoga’s international rise accelerated when the United Nations adopted 21 June as International Day of Yoga in 2014. Since then, India has promoted yoga as a diplomatic tool that blends culture, health and education. The 2022 leadership summit launched the UAE India Cultural Council. This institutionalised the growing partnership and introduced collaborative goals in heritage, academic exchange and sport. As yoga expanded through community events in the Emirates, policymakers began to see potential for more structured development.

What’s next

The UAE is preparing for:

  • More competitive yogasana events in multiple emirates
  • Possible representation in future Asian Games
  • Youth development programmes and school-level competitions
  • The India House cultural complex in Abu Dhabi serving as a future hub for yoga promotion

If these plans continue, the UAE is expected to become the first Gulf country to grant yoga full sporting recognition, complete with regulations, rankings and national team programmes. For India, this marks another milestone in elevating yoga into the international sporting mainstream. As both countries deepen cooperation, yoga is emerging as a prominent cultural bridge, connecting millions of people across borders and strengthening ties in sport, society and diplomacy.
