Across the waters of the Gulf, Qatar and Bahrain have drawn a new line of connection. A direct ferry now links Al-Ruwais Port and Sa’ada Marina, reducing the journey to just over an hour, and signalling more than convenience: it is a deliberate gesture of regional integration, economic cooperation, and shared ambition within the GCC.
Maritime linkage project: Bridging the Gulf
On Thursday, the State of Qatar and the Kingdom of Bahrain officially launched a regular maritime passenger route connecting Al-Ruwais Port in Qatar with Sa’ada Marina in Bahrain. The 50-minute ferry service covers approximately 65 kilometres, offering a direct and efficient connection between the two nations.The initiative was jointly inaugurated by Qatar’s Minister of Transport, HE Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulla bin Mohammed Al Thani, and Bahrain’s Minister of Transportation and Telecommunications, HE Dr Shaikh Abdulla bin Ahmed Al Khalifa. The project signals a new era of bilateral cooperation in maritime transport and underscores the commitment of both countries to GCC regional integration.HE Sheikh Mohammed described the project as a “pioneering strategic step” that reflects the depth of the brotherly bonds between Qatar and Bahrain. He emphasised that it advances the transportation industry and associated logistics services, serving mutual interests and boosting economic cohesion across the Gulf Cooperation Council.
Service details and operational plans
The ferry service is designed to provide comfort, convenience, and safety. Standard and VIP vessels are available, accommodating 28 and 32 passengers per trip, respectively. All journeys adhere to comprehensive security and customs protocols of both nations to ensure the safety of passengers.Ticketing is available via the MASAR electronic application, with economy-class round-trip fares priced at QR265 per individual. The trip between Al-Ruwais Port and Sa’ada Marina is expected to take between 70 and 80 minutes.The service will initially operate exclusively for GCC nationals. During the first phase, from 7 to 12 November, two round trips are scheduled daily—one in the morning and one in the evening. From 13 to 22 November, the frequency will increase to three daily round trips. Further adjustments to the schedule will depend on ridership levels and demand.
