Qatar’s local agricultural markets reopen tomorrow, signalling a renewed commitment to homegrown produce and sustainable farming. From Al Khor to Al Shahaniya, over 100 Qatari farms will offer seasonal vegetables, honey, dates, and other products, providing direct access for consumers while reinforcing the nation’s food security ambitions.

Markets reopen across the country

The Ministry of Municipality, through its Agricultural Affairs Department, announced that operations for the 2025/2026 local agricultural produce markets will begin on Thursday, 6 November 2025. Seasonal markets will be established in Al Khor, Al Thakhira, Al Wakrah, Al Shamal, and Al Shahaniya, while the Al Mazrouah market continues to operate year-round.Markets will be open to visitors every Thursday, Friday, and Saturday from 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM. More than 100 Qatari farms are set to participate, offering high-quality local products to residents and visitors alike.

Objectives and strategic importance

The Ministry emphasises that the initiative is part of a broader effort to support and strengthen local agricultural production. By creating direct channels between farmers and consumers, the programme:

  • Eliminates intermediaries, ensuring fair returns for farmers.
  • Empowers consumers to access fresh, high-quality produce.
  • Encourages farmers to adopt modern and sustainable agricultural practices.

This effort aligns with Qatar’s long-term developmental goals, including the Qatar National Vision 2030 and the National Food Security Strategy, which prioritise sustainability, self-sufficiency, and economic development. The agricultural markets operate alongside other initiatives, such as the Katara Harvest Festival (Mahaseel Festival) and the Agritech Exhibition Market, collectively fostering a more resilient and accessible food supply chain.

Range of products and market facilities

Visitors can expect a wide range of seasonal products, including:

  • Fresh vegetables
  • Natural honey
  • Dates
  • Other produce varying according to the agricultural calendar

All markets are equipped with facilities to ensure safe and comfortable shopping experiences, including:

  • Shaded areas
  • Organised parking
  • Public amenities

In addition, specialised inspection teams oversee product quality, ensuring all goods meet approved specifications and standards. These measures reinforce the Ministry’s commitment to both consumer safety and farmer support.

Growth and impact since inception

Since their launch in the 2012/2013 season, Qatar’s local agricultural produce markets have expanded rapidly:

  • The first market in Al Mazrouah involved 24 farms, selling 884 tons of agricultural products.
  • By the 2014/2015 season, participation had increased to 166 farms, with total sales reaching 10,679 tons, equivalent to 12% of total marketed local production.

The Ministry underscores that the markets are a practical demonstration of the state’s directives to enhance food security, support local farmers, and encourage increased production.Citizens and residents are invited to visit the markets, enjoy fresh national produce, and contribute to Qatar’s ongoing pursuit of agricultural self-sufficiency.
