This came after BJP’s Sunil Sharma, the LoP in the J&K Assembly, claimed that the chief minister reached out to the party after the 2014 elections and had “secret dealings”.

Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Sunday responded strongly to BJP leader Sunil Sharma’s allegations of having “secret dealings” with the BJP-led Centre after the 2014 general elections, swearing on the Quran that he did not seek an alliance with the BJP for statehood.

In response to Sharma’s reaction, asking him to swear on the Quran that he did not seek BJP alliance for statehood in 2024, Abdullah wrote, “I swear on the Holy Quran that I didn’t seek an alliance with the BJP in 2024 for Statehood or for any other reason. Unlike Sunil Sharma, I don’t tell lies for a living.”

This came after Sharma, the Leader of Opposition in the J&K Assembly, claimed that the chief minister reached out to the party after the 2014 elections, and dared him to take an oath that he had no “secret dealings” with the Narendra Modi-led government.

While addressing an election rally in Budgam, Sharma claimed that after the 2014 assembly elections, Abdullah made attempts to ally with the BJP. “However, our leadership, guided by principles and national integrity, refused such opportunistic overtures,” Sharma said.

He also accused the ruling National Conference (NC) of resorting to deceit and double standards to obstruct the BJP’s rise in Kashmir. “The NC is leaving no stone unturned to block the wave of change, but people have seen through their politics of hypocrisy,” he added.

Prior to this, Abdullah engaged in a heated war of words with J&K Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, after the latter said that the elected government cannot use the demand for statehood as an excuse for not performing its duties.

The CM reacted sharply to Sinha’s remarks, accusing the Centre of creating “hurdles” for the UT administration. We are told to work and not make excuses. We do not make excuses. We are performing despite the hurdles created in our way,” the Chief Minister said at an event in Eidgah.

“Today, the destruction that we are seeing, unemployment, decrease in GST earnings, vacant hotels, restaurants, taxis and houseboats, decrease in the sales of our handicrafts. Why? Because there was an attack in Pahalgam. Who is responsible for the security here? It is not in my hands. Had it been, we would have never allowed the situation to become such in J&K,” he said.

Abdullah, whose government has completed a year in office, said the lack of full statehood remains the biggest challenge facing the region. The government and top ministers have said J&K statehood will be restored when the time is right. The Supreme Court, too, had asked the government to restore J&K’s statehood at the earliest.
