‘Fan’ Prince William poses with football legend Neil Warnock after helping a local club secure a new road

Prince William brought unexpected star power to a small Cornish football club after stepping in to help secure a long-awaited access road that had troubled the community for years. During his visit to Mousehole AFC, he met football legend Neil Warnock for a playful photograph that quickly went viral. As reported by The Sun, Warnock shared the selfie with the cheeky caption, “Always happy to oblige when a fan wants a selfie.”

A royal push that shifted the project forward

Mousehole AFC had long battled with a narrow, pothole-ridden lane leading to its ground at Trungle Parc. The dangerous and congested route created years of frustration for players, supporters and local residents. Despite repeated appeals, the club struggled to find a workable solution. When Prince William learned about the problem, he helped connect the club with local businesses and technical experts who were able to assess the situation. Within days, club officials were in virtual meetings discussing possible approaches. A subsequent site visit confirmed that repairing the existing lane was no longer feasible. With planning permission already granted for an alternative access point, attention shifted to constructing an entirely new road. A consortium of national and local companies, including Tarmac, volunteered to deliver the build at no cost to the club.Simon Taylor, project lead for Mousehole AFC, said that the Prince’s involvement accelerated the process significantly. He described the collaboration of businesses and volunteers as an example of community spirit at its best, turning a previously stalled project into a tangible achievement.Prince William returned to the club to celebrate the progress, meeting players, staff and volunteers and joining them on the pitch. Neil Warnock, the 76-year-old managerial icon who led 16 clubs across his 42-year career, posed with William for the now-viral image.Warnock’s cheeky caption on social media framed the Prince as the “fan” in their photo, a moment that generated widespread amusement among football supporters. The appearance came shortly after Warnock made headlines for his humorous offer to manage Manchester United for free, poking fun at then-under-pressure boss Ruben Amorim. With United enduring a difficult run of form, Warnock’s light-hearted comments attracted significant attention. For Mousehole AFC, the new road represents a landmark achievement and a major improvement for the club’s future. Members say the Prince’s involvement gave the project the momentum it had long needed, ensuring the community finally received the safe and functional access route it had been campaigning for.
