New safety rules take off: Travelers must now navigate updated regulations for lithium batteries, power banks, smart bags, and e-cigarettes. Oman Air has rolled out revised safety guidelines for passengers carrying these items, underscoring the airline’s commitment to passenger safety and smooth travel. The updated rules clarify what can be carried, how devices should be handled in-flight, and which items are strictly prohibited.

Power banks: Carry on only

Passengers must carry power banks exclusively in hand luggage. They are not allowed in checked baggage, and using or charging them during the flight is prohibited. Power banks should be placed under the seat or in the seat pocket, rather than in overhead compartments. Additionally, damaged or unlabeled power banks are strictly forbidden, ensuring all devices on board meet safety standards.

Smart bags: Battery rules

Smart bags must comply with specific battery requirements:

  • Bags with non-removable batteries cannot be checked in.
  • If the battery is removable, passengers must remove it before check-in and carry it in the cabin.
  • Removed batteries should be kept under the seat or in the passenger’s hand baggage during the flight.

These rules are aimed at minimizing the risks associated with lithium batteries during air travel.E-cigarettes and vapes are allowed only in hand luggage and must remain with the passenger throughout the flight. Use or charging on board is strictly prohibited to prevent any fire hazards.

Charging personal electronic devices

Passengers may use aircraft charging ports for devices such as phones, tablets, and other personal electronic devices (PEDs). All devices must remain under supervision while charging. Importantly, loose batteries, power banks, e-cigarettes, and vapes cannot be charged during the flight.

Lithium battery powered personal transportation devices

Oman Air has banned all lithium battery-powered transportation devices from both checked and carry-on baggage. This includes, but is not limited to:

  • Hoverboards
  • Balance wheels
  • Mini-scooters
  • Mini-Segways
  • Similar personal transport devices

These rules are designed to reduce the risk of fires or malfunctions caused by lithium batteries.

Commitment to passenger safety

The airline emphasized that these updated regulations are part of its ongoing efforts to maintain the highest safety standards for all passengers. By clearly defining what can be carried, how devices should be handled, and which items are prohibited, Oman Air aims to ensure safe, smooth, and worry-free travel for everyone on board.
