BJP senior leader Amit Malviya on Wednesday slammed the Congress party’s decision to award the 2024 Indira Gandhi Peace Prize to former Chilean President Michelle Bachelet.

Malviya accused Bachelet of aligning with an “anti-India, pro-Islamist” narrative, and said the Congress’ decision to award her was both revealing and predictable

In a lengthy post on X, Malviya accused Bachelet of using her position at the UN to target India, particularly over issues like “minority rights” and “freedom of speech.”

Congress’s decision to award the Indira Gandhi Peace Prize to Michelle Bachelet is as revealing as it is predictable. “Bachelet carried her ideological baggage into her UN role, where she routinely targeted India under the guise of “minority rights” and “freedom of speech”,” the BJP IT Cell Head wrote.

According to Malviya, these issues were often raised by Bachelet to criticise India’s internal matters, including its policies on Kashmir and its treatment of Muslims.

“She repeatedly weaponised the very ideals of liberal democracy—free speech, dissent, minority protections—to amplify the Congress-style playbook of disruption, distrust, and manufactured outrage, especially by recycling discredited myths about Kashmir. Her habit of accusing India of “marginalising Muslims” fit neatly into the same propaganda template,” he added.

“The real issue isn’t her bias. It’s Congress’s eagerness to reward it,” Malviya said, emphasising that Congress had found ideological allies abroad to share in its anti-India stance.

He added, “For a party that has been rejected and cast aside by Indian voters, it makes perfect sense to seek comfort among those who share its prejudices and hostility towards India’s interests.”

Michelle Bachelet, who served as Chile’s first female president and UN Human Rights Commissioner from 2018 to 2022, received the prestigious award on Wednesday from Sonia Gandhi, chairperson of the Indira Gandhi Memorial Trust. Bachelet’s award was granted in recognition of her work for peace, disarmament, and human development.
