While addressing the Assam Assembly on the status of the investigation, Sarma faced repeated interruptions from opposition members

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Tuesday strongly criticised several opposition leaders for what he described as their “absurd statements” regarding the investigation into the murder of singer Zubeen Garg. “Listening to the opposition’s absurd statements in Assam, it seems that in their attempt to pursue political gains, they are actually speaking in defence of Zubeen Garg’s killers. Their eyes are on something else, and their targets are elsewhere,” Sarma wrote in a post on X.

While addressing the Assembly on the status of the investigation, Sarma faced repeated interruptions from opposition members — most prominently from Sivasagar MLA Akhil Gogoi, a former farmers’ leader associated with the Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti (KMSS). Gogoi questioned the government on various aspects of the probe, including the issuance of a Letter Rogatory (LoR).

Countering him sharply, Sarma said, “When we have already provided material related to the case to Siddhartha Sarma and Shyamkanu Mahanta, the opposition still asks why an LoR has not been issued. These arguments sound like those of defence lawyers in court. Yet, the Bar Association of Assam has already decided that no lawyer will defend any accused in the Zubeen Garg case. But Akhil Gogoi is now acting as the defence counsel inside the Assembly.”

Sarma further alleged that some opposition leaders were attempting to derive political benefits by interfering in the case. Ironically, he added, many of them “cannot even recite a few lines from Zubeen Garg’s songs,” suggesting they have little understanding of what Zubeen means to Assam.

Drawing from one of Zubeen Garg’s most widely discussed songs, written during the anti-CAA protests, Sarma reminded the opposition of the singer’s message: “Friends, don’t do politics… all ministers and MLAs are like papad — look edible, but are merely making noise.”

Sarma remarked that perhaps Zubeen had leaders like Akhil Gogoi in mind when he wrote those lyrics, urging the opposition not to politicise the ongoing investigation.
