The passing of Swaraj Kaushal, senior BJP leader, acclaimed lawyer, and former Mizoram governor, marks the loss of a distinguished public servant but also extinguishes a uniquely witty presence in India’s political ecosystem. While he had an accomplished career—being designated a Senior Advocate by the Supreme Court at 34 and becoming the youngest Governor of Mizoram at 37—it was his playful and often deadpan humour, particularly on social media, that endeared him to a wide public audience.

Kaushal was the witty counterpoint to his late wife, Union Minister Sushma Swaraj, whose prolific and responsive Twitter (now X) presence earned her global recognition. While Swaraj was known for resolving citizens’ international crises via a single tweet, Kaushal became famous for his self-deprecating, often romantic humour that offered a rare, human glimpse into the lives of India’s political power couples.

His most famous quip came when a Twitter user asked him why he didn’t follow his wife, Sushma Swaraj, on the platform. Kaushal’s instant, legendary reply was, “Because I am not stranded in Libya or Yemen.” This single line cleverly referenced his wife’s reputation as the “go-to” minister for Indians facing trouble abroad, simultaneously displaying affection and sharp political awareness.

His witty repertoire often revolved around the realities of a political marriage:

  • When a user asked him when he had last met his wife, Kaushal cheekily replied, “Are you an RTI activist?”
  • In a similar vein, when asked if their marriage was a love marriage or arranged, he questioned, “What is the warranty period for each?”
  • Perhaps most endearingly, when Sushma Swaraj shared a proposal suggesting men should study home science to reduce the burden on women, Kaushal shared the news report with a one-word comment: “………..bad times ahead.”

These exchanges, often retweeted and liked by thousands, demonstrated a refreshing willingness to let down the political guard and engage with the public on a deeply personal, humorous level. Their shared public wit was not just entertaining; it served as a powerful tool to humanise two leaders who spent decades in the high-stress environment of public service.

Even in moments of deep distress, Kaushal maintained a dignified public presence laced with emotion. When a troll directed unsavoury language towards Sushma Swaraj, he responded not with vitriol, but by sharing a heartfelt personal anecdote about his wife’s devotion to his family, concluding with the respectful sign-off: “Please do not use such words for her. We are first generation in law and politics. We pray for nothing more than her life.”
