Karnataka deputy chief minister DK Shivakumar on Saturday condemned the summons issued by the ED pertaining to his donations to National Herald and Young India, calling it an “act of deliberate harassment”.

Shivakumar said the latest actions are unwarranted. “We have been fully cooperating with the investigation from the beginning. There is nothing hidden here. Despite all this, I don’t know why the ED has filed a chargesheet. There was no need for the police to register a case in this matter. We will legally fight this battle in court,” he told reporters.

He said the Delhi police have instructed him and his brother, DK Suresh, to provide information by December 19. He said the only objective was to “torture” supporters of Sonia and Rahul Gandhi.

“We had already provided answers to all these queries previously. Yet, the issuance of the summons is shocking. Delhi Police have instructed us to provide information related to this matter by December 19,” Shivakumar said. “We are paying our taxes. We give our money to whomever we wish. They initially filed a PMLA (Prevention of Money Laundering Act) case to harass us; what happened after that?”

Shivakumar alleged that there is a political motive behind this move. “The main intention is to harass supporters of Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi, and to create confusion,” he said.

Speaking about the National Herald and Young India institutions, he justified the donations. “National Herald, Young India, these are institutions of our Congress party. Because we are Congress members, we provided donations from our trusts when these institutions were going through a difficult time. Many people, just like us, have helped,” he added.

The deputy chief minister said he and DK Suresh received the summons on Friday (December 5). Suresh had given a sum as a donation when he was an MP, he said, adding that they will study the notice in detail and take necessary legal action.
