Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Tuesday stepped up his attack on West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, accusing her government of blocking border fencing amid unrest in neighbouring Bangladesh and rising concerns over infiltration.

The remarks come months ahead of the West Bengal Assembly elections, due in 2026, with Shah signalling an aggressive political pitch in the state.

What Amit Shah said?

Addressing a gathering, Shah said infiltration through West Bengal’s borders was not just a state issue but a matter of national security. He alleged that the Trinamool Congress government was not cooperating with the Centre on border fencing, which he said was necessary to protect the country’s culture and security.

Shah claimed that the Border Security Force could not act effectively unless fencing was completed. He said he had written seven letters to Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee seeking land for fencing but received no cooperation. Questioning her stand, he asked why she was unwilling to allow fencing and what she was “scared” of.

Shah’s attack on TMC govt

The Home Minister also launched an attack on the Trinamool Congress, criticising its 14-year rule in the state. He alleged that Bengal’s demography was passing through a “dangerous phase” and claimed that fake documents were being created in the state.

Shah asserted that only a BJP government could seal Bengal’s borders and ensure national security. He said the Trinamool Congress was incapable of handling the issue and that the BJP was the only alternative.

Shah’s assurance to Motua community

During his speech, Shah also sought to reassure the Motua community. He said they need not fear displacement and claimed that Mamata Banerjee could not throw them out. He added that all welfare schemes would continue if the BJP came to power.

“Not a single scheme will be shut once we come to power,” Shah said, presenting the BJP as both firm on security and supportive of welfare.
