Indian stock exchanges BSE and NSE will remain open for trading on Thursday, January 1 even as most major global stock markets will remain shut on account of the New Year holiday. The commodity exchanges, The Multi Commodity Exchange of India (MCX) and National Commodity & Derivatives Exchange (NCDEX) will also remain open in the first session between 9 am and 5 pm and will be closed in the evening session.

Stock exchanges in China, Hong Kong, Japan, Singapore, France, Germany, UAE, UK and the US will be closed on the first day of the new year. Meanwhile, China and Japan bourses will have an extended new year holiday on Friday, January 2.

The benchmark indices bid adieu to 2025 in style, breaking their four-session losing streak. Metals, auto and financials led the charge as most sectors saw buying trends, barring IT. The Nifty closed at 26,129.60, up 190.75 points or 0.74%, while the Sensex gained 545.52 points or 0.64% to finish at 85,220.60.

Rupak De, Senior Technical Analyst at LKP Securities calls Nifty reclaiming its 21EMA after a brief dull phase, as a positive development. While the trend is not decisively bullish, a clear breakout shows that the current recovery may continue in the near term, he opined.

“On the daily chart, a doji formation followed by a sharp rise, reflected through a visible green candle, signals the possibility of a more gains ahead. On the upside, the index could move towards 26,315, while 26,100 may act as the initial support.” he added.

Stock market holiday calendar for 2026
The official trading holiday calendar for 2026 was recently released by the exchanges, giving investors and traders early visibility into non-trading days across the cash and derivatives segments. The schedule, notified under the exchange bye-laws and F&O regulations, covers 15 full trading holidays during the year, along with details of holidays that fall on weekends and the annual Muhurat Trading session. 2026 will have one more holiday than the current year.

Equity, equity derivatives and currency derivatives markets will observe 15 trading holidays in 2026. The calendar kicks off with Republic Day on January 26, followed by key religious and national holidays including Holi (March 3), Ram Navami (March 26), Mahavir Jayanti (March 31) and Good Friday (April 3). Markets will also remain closed on Ambedkar Jayanti (April 14), Maharashtra Day (May 1) and Bakri Id (May 28).

In the second half of the year, trading will be halted for Muharram (June 26), Ganesh Chaturthi (September 14) and Gandhi Jayanti (October 2). This will be followed by closures on Dussehra (October 20), Diwali Balipratipada (November 10) and Guru Nanak Jayanti (November 24), with Christmas on December 25 marking the final holiday of the year.

Notably, the holiday list does not include Diwali, as the festival falls on a Sunday in 2026.
