Madhya Pradesh minister and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Kailash Vijayvargiya on Thursday, January 1, responded to the controversy around his irritated response to a journalist who was questioning him over water contamination-related deaths in Indore.

Taking to ‘X’ (formerly Twitter), Kailash Vijayvargiya said that he and his team have been working continuously to improve the situation in the affected areas.

“My team and I have been continuously working to improve the situation in the affected area without sleep for the past two days. My people are suffering from contaminated water, and some have left us; in this state of deep sorrow, my words came out wrong in response to a media question. For this, I express my regret. But until my people are completely safe and healthy, I will not sit quietly,” he said in a post in Hindi.

Meanwhile, Vijayvargiya also addressed the media and provided details on the status quo. He said that instructions have been given to the concerned authorities to fix all the water-related issues in the city.

“Instructions have been given to first fix all the water problems that arise in the city… I am just coming from Bhagirthpura, and patients are continuously arriving there. From yesterday to the day before, 200 people were admitted. A total of 1400 people are infected. No patient is serious. We are focusing on ensuring that people get good treatment”, he said, as quoted by news agency ANI.

What is the controversy?

BJP leader and Madhya Pradesh minister Kailash Vijayvargiya kicked up a row after a NDTV reporter asked him why responsibility for the water contamination-related deaths in Indore was placed on junior officials and not on senior leaders, the publication mentioned in a report.

Visibly annoyed by the question, Vijayvargiya responded: “Oh, leave it, don’t ask useless questions.” When probed further, he also retorted to some objectionable language.

Water contamination-related deaths in Indore

Seven people died, and nearly 150 were admitted to hospitals in the past few days after consuming contaminated water in Madhya Pradesh’s Indore. Amid the crisis, the state government has stepped up emergency measures.

Mayor of the city, Pushyamitra Bhargava, told news agency PTI that while the health department reported three deaths, four more people who were admitted to hospitals also died.

According to officials, a leakage was detected in the main water supply pipeline beneath a toilet in Bhagirthpura, leading to the supply of contaminated water.
