A case has been registered after the Block Development Office (BDO) in Murshidabad’s Farakka was allegedly ransacked by a group of unidentified men during an ongoing voter revision hearing, leaving a poll official injured.

According to a written complaint filed by Farakka BDO Junaid Ahamed, the incident took place around 1:30 pm on Wednesday when an SIR hearing was underway on the premises. As per the complaint, a group of miscreants stormed into several official rooms and vandalised government property in the presence of Booth Level Officers (BLOs), the Joint BDO, the Officer-in-Charge (Election), and Assistant Electoral Registration Officers (AEROs).

During the chaos, one AERO sustained injuries while attempting to shield himself, the complaint said.

Police registered a case at Farakka police station under multiple sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Prevention of Damage to Public Property (PDPP) Act.

Meanwhile, BJP MLA Gouri Sankar accused the ruling TMC Farakka MLA Manirul Islam of leading the vandalism caused at the government property. In a sharp attack, Sankar also attacked Mamata Banerjee for instigating her party cadres across the state to commit riots and violence.

“Today, Farakka MLA Manirul Islam vandalised the block office. How can a public representative vandalise property? Who gave him the right to do so? Are they not Indian citizens, or are they Bangladeshis who think they can vandalise a block office in India?” he said as quoted by news agency ANI.

He said that the people are watching and shall give them the befitting reply in the 2026 West Bengal assembly elections.

“The public is ready to give them a befitting reply. In the 2026 elections, whether it’s Manirul or someone else, they will get their answer from the public,” he said.

Meanwhile, Islam responded to the allegations and addressed party workers outside the BDO office. He claimed that the SIR exercise was being used to target minorities. “We will not accept the SIR. It is being used to harass a particular community. I am ready to face a bullet while protecting the people of Farakka,” he said.

Denying involvement of TMC workers in the vandalism, Islam said those who ransacked the office were common people and not party activists. “Have you seen any TMC flags? These are common people,” he said.

Meanwhile, two arrests have been made so far in connection with the case. Following the arrests, the state government has issued instructions to the Director General of Police and the Additional Director General (Law and Order) to provide necessary security to officials engaged in SIR-related work in Murshidabad district.

Meanwhile, sources in the Election Commission said that indications suggest the Commission may initiate a suo motu FIR against certain individuals if required.
