Referring to the BJP’s massive electoral victory in the Maharashtra civic polls, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday said that the young generation of India, especially Gen Z, believes in the development model of the saffron party.

While addressing a gathering in West Bengal’s Malda after laying the foundations for several new development projects and flagging off India’s first Vande Bharat sleeper train, PM Modi expressed confidence that the voters in Bengal too will choose the BJP in the upcoming assembly elections.

“In particular, the BJP has secured a record victory for the first time in Mumbai, in the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), one of the world’s largest municipal corporations, which is a significant development in Maharashtra politics. A few days ago, the BJP also elected its first mayor in Thiruvananthapuram, the capital of Kerala. This shows that even in places where winning elections was once considered impossible for the BJP, the party is now receiving unprecedented support,” he said as quoted by news agency ANI.

“People of India, especially Gen Z, have reposed faith in BJP’s development model. After witnessing your excitement here, I am saying this with full belief that this time people of Bengal will give BJP an overwhelming majority,” PM Modi added.

The Prime Minister further hit out at the Mamata Banerjee-led TMC government and announced that it was time for the state to bring the BJP to power in the upcoming elections.

“In every corner of Bengal, there is a government of good governance under the BJP. Now it’s Bengal’s turn for good governance. That’s why, after the victory in the Bihar elections, I said that with the blessings of Ma Ganga, the river of development will now flow in Bengal as well, and the BJP will make this happen…” he said.

The Prime Minister further said infiltration posed one of the biggest challenges before Bengal, asserting that even prosperous countries across the world were taking firm steps to identify and deport illegal migrants.

“Infiltration is a very big challenge before Bengal. There are developed and prosperous countries in the world that have no shortage of money, yet they are removing infiltrators. It is equally necessary to remove infiltrators from West Bengal,” he noted.

BMC Poll Results

The BJP and Shiv Sena on Friday clinched a massive victory, securing a decisive mandate in the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) polls. The Mayuti Alliance, led by the BJP, bagged 118 out of 227 seats. In the BMC specifically, the BJP won 89 of the 227 seats, up from 82 in 2017, while the Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena secured 29 seats. Together, the two allies crossed the majority mark of 114.

The Shiv Sena (UBT), led by Uddhav Thackeray, retained a substantial presence in Mumbai with 65 seats, though this was a drop from the 84 seats won by the undivided party in 2017, before the 2022 split.
