The stand-off continued in Lok Sabha between the treasury bench and the opposition for the second consecutive day as Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi again quoted a magazine article on India-China border clashes in Galwan Valley in 2020.

Rahul Gandhi started his speech during the Motion of Thanks to the President’s address on Tuesday, “authenticating” the article of Caravan magazine, which mentioned a memoir of former Army chief MM Naravane’s book ‘Four Stars of Destiny’ on the 2020 clashes, and tabled it before the House.

“Yesterday, I started my speech on this article. The Speaker had said that this should be done as per the rules. Now I want this article to be authenticated. Please authenticate this and I want to speak on this. A very important matter in the President’s speech is the matter of national security. The relationship between us and the Chinese and the Pakistani. There is an important article which I have authenticated, which speaks about the reaction of the Prime Minister,” he said, before being interrupted by the ruling party MPs.

Krishna Prasad Tenneti, who was in the chair, requested the opposition leader to speak on the President’s address.

Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju also asked Gandhi not to mislead the House and pointed out that Speaker Om Birla has already given a ruling on this matter.

“Let us not mislead the House. Let us clear the confusion. Today, I also requested Venugopal ji and Gogoi ji. We are patiently waiting to hear from the Leader of the Opposition. The matter he has just referred to was already addressed yesterday, and the Chair has given its ruling. The paper on which he has authenticated his remarks has been tabled in the House. However, since a ruling has already been given on the matter he referred to yesterday, he cannot quote the same issue again. Under the pretext of making an indirect reference, he cannot raise the same matter once more. Please avoid referring to an issue that has already been settled,” Rijiju said.

However, Rahul Gandhi continued his speech on the same subject, forcing the chair to call the name of the next speaker– Samajwadi Party MP Naresh Uttam Patel. However, opposition MPs from Trinamool Congress, SP and the DMK refused to speak in support of Rahul Gandhi.

The opposition members then protested against the Chair’s decision, attempted to climb onto the table in front of the Speaker, and threw papers towards the Chair.

As the ruckus continued, the Lok Sabha was adjourned till 3 PM.

After the House reassembled, the Chair named several Congress MPs for their alleged misconduct, and a motion was passed to suspend them before the House was adjourned again for the day.

Manickam Tagore, Amarinder Singh Raja Warring, Gurjeet Singh Aujla, Dean Kuriakose, Prashant Padole, Chamala Kiran Kumar Reddy, and Hibi Eden were among the Congress MPs who have been suspended for the remainder of the Budget Session. S Venkatesh from CPI(M) was also suspended.

What Happened On Monday Session?

Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla on Monday ruled that Rahul Gandhi cannot base his speech on an unpublished book. However, the Leader of the Opposition did not relent, leading to two adjournments of the House before it was finally adjourned for the day.

Union Minister Amit Shah and Rajnath Singh, who were present during the LoP’s speech, also said that he should not be allowed to speak on an “unpublished” book.

The BJP has accused Rahul Gandhi of reading “concocted things” about China in Parliament and warning that such conduct sets a dangerous precedent. The party accused Gandhi of becoming a “fake news factory” by reading what it described as fictitious material in Parliament.
