‘India Has A Preference Over…’: Piyush Goyal On US Trade Deal, Trump’s ‘Russian Oil’ Claim
Union Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal dismissed claims that the India–US trade deal undermines India’s sovereignty, saying the agreement was the result of careful and intensive negotiations conducted in the country’s best interests. He said the deal supports India’s vision of becoming a developed nation by 2047 and will open wide opportunities for youth, women, farmers, fishermen and MSMEs. Goyal highlighted gains for sectors such as textiles, footwear, leather, toys, handloom, handicrafts, auto components and furniture. Addressing energy concerns, he said importing crude oil and gas from the US helps diversify supply, though buying decisions rest with companies. He explained that trade agreements ensure smoother trade and preferential access, giving India an edge over competitors with an 18 per cent reciprocal tariff. Goyal also underlined the depth of negotiations and credited Ambassador Sergio Gor for his role in finalising the deal.
