The Parliament stalemate resulting from last week’s ruckus in the Lok Sabha during the ongoing Budget session continues, with neither the ruling side or the opposition willing to yield ground.

From a possible no-confidence motion against the Lok Sabha Speaker by the opposition to Congress MP Rahul Gandhi’s “grievances”, the situation in Parliament is fraught with uncertainty despite high-level meetings.

But central to this deadlock are four specific issues raised by Rahul Gandhi, who is leader of the opposition in the Lok Sabha. According to government sources, these have become the primary hurdles to achieving any form of consensus, not only between the ruling and opposing sides but also within the opposition.

Here is all you need to know:

  • The sources said the first issue involves allegations against women opposition MPs.
  • The second point of contention concerns the suspension of eight opposition MPs till the end of the session, which has become a significant flashpoint.
  • The third matter is about the demand to allow BJP MP Nishikant Dubey to speak in the Lok Sabha. The sources said while Dubey had attempted to raise certain matters, the Chair ultimately did not grant him permission and several portions of his address were subsequently removed from the official records.
  • Finally, the fourth conflict focuses on the opposition’s demand that Gandhi be able to address the House. While the government has maintained that he may speak with the Chair’s approval, it expressed concern that he may raise the same issues again, potentially resulting in further disruptions.

WHAT DOES THE RULING SIDE SAY?

The sources said the government has defended its stance, relying heavily on House rules and video evidence.

Regarding the allegations against women MPs, it said video footage clearly shows they were moving towards the Prime Minister’s seat contradicting the opposition’s version.

The government has adopted a firm line on the suspended MPs, insisting that discussions on revoking it can only take place once the “normal functioning of the House” is restored.

WHAT DOES THE OPPOSITION SAY?

The opposition, however, is itself navigating internal fractures. The sources said a proposed no-confidence motion against the Speaker lacks unanimous support within.

Specifically, the Trinamool Congress and NCP are reportedly not in favour of the move. Instead, a majority of opposition parties are said to be keen on ensuring the House functions properly, preferring to prioritise public interest issues over confrontations.

A meeting on Monday between leaders from the ruling and opposition sides failed to achieve any breakthrough as both stood firm on their positions.
