The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is preparing for a major organisational overhaul in Assam ahead of the assembly elections, with the party planning to deny tickets to sitting MLAs facing even minor anti-incumbency. Sources indicate that the BJP may field 25-30 new candidates in a bid to strengthen its prospects and counter voter fatigue.

This is part of the party’s larger strategy to retain power for a third consecutive term in the Assam legislative assembly. The leadership has made it clear that performance and public perception will be key criteria in deciding nominations.

Meanwhile, the party’s election preparations are gaining momentum. According to sources, the Election Commission is likely to announce the poll schedule in the second week of March, after which the Model Code of Conduct may come into force. A minimum gap of 25 days will be maintained between the announcement and polling, making early April—possibly first week—the likely window for voting.

The BJP will contest the elections under the leadership of chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, reaffirming continuity at the top. Party leaders believe that his leadership remains central to their electoral strategy in the state.

The party has identified its campaign focus by dividing key issues into two broad categories—macro and micro. On the macro front, the BJP will highlight illegal immigration, development initiatives of the state and Union governments, infrastructure projects under the Modi administration, Hindutva, women’s empowerment, and allegations against Congress leaders, particularly Gaurav Gogoi.

At the grassroots level, the focus is on local and community-specific concerns. The state government has identified nearly 100 issues at the village, block, and district levels, including those related to anganwadi workers, tea garden workers, and government employees. The BJP plans to seek votes based on its record in addressing these problems.

To further boost its campaign, the party has sought time from Prime Minister Narendra Modi for 8 to 10 rallies after the announcement of election dates, signalling an aggressive outreach plan.

The party has also decided that they will restrict the number of new entrants who are purely seeking election tickets. Any new joining, only if absolutely mandatory, will be done.

The leadership remains confident that the National Democratic Alliance can secure between 90 and 100 seats in the upcoming polls, positioning itself strongly for another term in office.
