With the first phase of polling in West Bengal underway, BJP leader Subhendu Sarkar claimed that he was attacked by Trinamool Congress (TMC) workers for protesting against booth jamming.

Sarkar, a BJP candidate from Kumarganj, said he was injured and his car was vandalised during the incident in his Assembly constituency.

Speaking to reporters, the BJP leader alleged that agents deployed at multiple polling stations were “forcibly removed”.

“I personally intervened and ensured they were allowed back inside. When I visited Booth No. 24 to inspect the situation on the ground, they launched an attack on my entire team and me; they were clearly intent on creating an atmosphere of intimidation and fear…”, he said, as quoted by news agency ANI.

A video circulating online showed Sarkar being chased and assaulted as security personnel rushed to the scene to ensure the leader’s safety.

‘Acting Out Of Fear, Desperation’

Subhendu Sarkar claimed the TMC attacked him and his team out of “sheer desperation and fear”.

“Mamata Banerjee has lost the election, and Trinamool Congress are losing all four seats in this region. Out of sheer desperation and fear, they launched an attack on us,” he said, according to ANI.

Besides Sarkar, TMC’s sitting MLA Toraf Hossain Mondal, Mofazzal Hossain from the CPI(M) and Congress’ Gulam Martuja Mandal are also in the fray from the Kumarganj assembly constituency.

In the 2021 Assembly polls, TMC’s Mondal bagged 89,763 votes and defeated BJP’s Manas Sarkar by a margin of 29,367 votes.

The first phase of polling in West Bengal is underway, with the state recording a voter turnout of 62.18 per cent till 1 P.M.
