Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi has made fresh attacks against Prime Minister Narendra Modi over his foreign visits, accusing him of asking ordinary citizens to avoid overseas travel while continuing international tours himself.

Rahul Gandhi also warned that the country was heading towards serious economic trouble and claimed inflation and fuel prices would rise sharply in the coming months.

‘Economic upheaval is coming’

Speaking on the economic condition in India, Rahul Gandhi said people would soon witness the effects of rising inflation. “An economic upheaval is coming,” he said.

He warned that the prices of petrol, diesel and cooking gas could increase significantly in the near future. “You will see where inflation reaches in just a few months. You will see where the prices of petrol, diesel, and gas go,” Gandhi stated.

The Congress leader also claimed the government was asking people not to buy gold and avoid foreign travel during the present economic situation.

Rahul Gandhi called the Prime Minister a traitor. “When these RSS workers come before you and speak about Narendra Modi and Amit Shah, you should tell them to their face that your Prime Minister is a traitor, your Home Minister is a traitor…Your organisation is traitorous. You have worked to sell out India.”

Questions over PM’s foreign visits

Rahul Gandhi criticised the Prime Minister over the use of expensive aircraft for foreign travel. “The Prime Minister tells people not to travel abroad, and then himself travels overseas in aircraft worth thousands of crores,” he said.

He accused PM Modi of sending conflicting messages to the public while continuing his own overseas engagements.

Rahul Gandhi also referred to earlier appeals asking people to reduce travel and spending amid global instability and the Middle East crisis.

Claims over supply crisis

The Congress MP further alleged that the country could face shortages in essential supplies. “Gas supply to end, fertiliser also… kerosene too will finish,” he added.

He warned that an economic crisis was approaching the country’s doorstep.

Rahul Gandhi also accused the government of weakening constitutional systems and damaging institutions. “Economic crisis at your doorstep as he has finished constitutionally,” Gandhi stated.

He further alleged that “he has sold the eco systems”.

During his remarks, Rahul Gandhi also referred to Prime Minister Modi’s addresses during the Covid-19 pandemic and demonetisation period.

“Narendra Modi will tell you, he will cry, just as he cried during Covid and demonetisation,  he will cry and say that none of it is his fault,” Gandhi said.

The remarks marked his latest criticism of the Prime Minister’s handling of economic and political issues.

BJP hits back

The BJP hit back at Rahul Gandhi for criticising Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Party spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla said, “Congress talks about being a ‘mohabbat ki dukaan’, but this is their real identity. They have repeatedly insulted PM Modi and even targeted his mother. Because the Prime Minister comes from an OBC background, they have always disrespected him.”

Sharad Pawar defends PM Modi

Meanwhile, veteran politician and Nationalist Congress Party (Sharadchandra Pawar) chief Sharad Pawar defended Prime Minister Modi amid criticism from opposition parties over the ongoing foreign tour.

Pawar said political differences should not affect India’s global image.

“Prime Minister Modi is working to protect the country’s prestige outside India. We may have different political views, but when it comes to the nation’s honour, political differences should not be brought in,” Pawar said.

Pawar stressed that protecting the country’s prestige should remain above political divisions.
