Tamil Nadu BJP Chief Nainar Nagendran on Friday downplayed the impact of former party leader K Annamalai’s resignation, saying it would not affect the BJP, and that anyone was free to start a new political movement.
This came after Annamalai resigned from the Bharatiya Janata Party, ending weeks of suspense over his political future. BJP national president Nitin Nabin has accepted his resignation from both the party’s primary membership and organisational responsibilities, bringing to a close Annamalai’s six-year association with the BJP.
Responding to Annamalai’s exit, Nainar Nagendran said it would not have any impact on the party. “Anyone is free to start a party. It is a democratic right,” he said.

Nagendran also highlighted that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been outspoken about the importance of the Tamil language during his visits abroad.
What Did Annamalai Say?
In his resignation letter, Annamalai said he had joined the BJP inspired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership and to change Tamil Nadu’s political culture. While expressing gratitude to the party leadership for entrusting him with key responsibilities, he revealed that he had conveyed his disagreements with the top leadership over the past 18 months.

In a message shared after his resignation from the BJP, Annamalai described his six years in the party as a valuable learning experience and thanked the organisation for the opportunities it provided. “We consider the six years we spent working in the BJP as a significant opportunity and learning experience,” he said.
Annamalai took a dig at CM Joseph Vijay and his coalition allies by calling for an end to cult or dynastic politics and hinted at launching a new political movement in Tamil Nadu. He also urged the youth to join his new outfit.
“A new movement and a new dimension in politics, emerging from our core principles, is about to begin,” he declared, adding that his focus would remain on the state’s development. Annamalai said that the political movement he is about to launch should be guided by the “very spirit and principle”.
Annamalai further announced that he will contest the next general elections independently. “I will contest the next general elections independently. We are going to view BJP the same way we view DMK, AIADMK, TTV, Vaiko, and Seeman,” he said.
