After Ben Stokes announced his retirement from England cricket team, another setback has hit England cricket fans, as Brendon McCullum has been sacked from Test Coaching. The ECB (England and Wales Cricket Board) announced his departure on Sunday, however he will continue to be coach of England team for T20 and One-Day. The decision has been taken after England’s continues bad performance in the format and getting defeated from rival teams.

The ECB has sacked Brendon McCullum as England’s Test coach following poor team performance and recent defeats, though he remains coach for T20 and ODI formats. Despite mixed results under the ‘Bazball’ approach, the ECB credited McCullum for transforming the team’s culture.
This decision comes after England lost Ashes against Australia, and series defeat against New Zealand. This intensified the pressure on Brendon McCullum and it resulted in removing him from coaching for Test team. However, ECB announced they have started looking for next Test team coach.
Pressure Mounted After Poor Results and Stokes’ Retirement
Now this move has made another phase for England team as first they lost their captain Ben Stokes, and now Brendon McCullum, which made a new perspective for England to look out for new leadership in the team. Even the England’s Managing Director Robert Key also facing the same criticism.
Interestingly, Ben Stokes announced his retirement after he was involved in nightclub controversy which also made him ousts from the squad of second Test against New Zealand. Now MuCullum’s exit has given a shock to fans as England is still considering for his next Test team captain.
The Bazball culture was introduced in the partnership of Stokes-McCullum and it actually resulted in some of memorable wins for the team, like against New Zealand and Pakistan. However, in the final result it was never too delivered approach for England, as the same approached faced them defeats against Australia and India. Those results made England’s tactics questioned multiple times.
ECB Thanks McCullum for Transforming Team Culture
Despite the mixed results, ECB appreciated McCullum’s tenure in England test team’s period and credited him for changing the approach in test cricket.
“Some of England’s most memorable moments in recent history have occurred under Brendon’s leadership of the Test team,” England Men’s Managing Director Rob Key said in an official statement.
“It’s been an absolute privilege to watch him shape the mentality of the team, to one the players have loved, and see him develop a new generation of talent who will be at the heart of England Men’s teams for years to come. He leaves the Test team well-set and poised to achieve great things,” he added.
With the bazball approach, McCullum’s tenure was also criticized for his freedom to players, specially after reports came out of players doing training sessions heavily drunk and multiple casino visits despite suffering defeats from Australia. Specially the Ben Stokes incident made a lot of pressure on Brendon McCullum.
McCullum Says He Is ‘Gutted’ but Respects ECB’s Decision
Announcing his departure from test team coaching, McCullum said he is disappointed but happy that he achieved what he did as Test Coach.
“I’ve absolutely loved coaching the Test side, and I’m incredibly proud of what we’ve achieved together. There’ve been some unbelievable highs and a few tough days along the way, but that’s all part of taking on a challenge like this. It’s been a privilege and an honour, and I’m grateful. Grateful to the players, the staff and the fans who supported us on the journey,” said McCullum.
He also made sure that now his focus will be on England’s performance in limited over formats.
“Of course, I’m gutted not to be continuing, but I respect the decision. My focus now is on giving everything I’ve got to the White Ball teams and helping England keep moving forward. I wish the Test team nothing but success. There’s a hell of a lot of talent in that dressing room, and they’re a special bunch of lads. I’ll always be backing the boys, with a smile on my face, and hoping they keep taking the game on. I know they’ll continue to make people proud,” he added.
Successful Start, Difficult Finish
McCullum was appointed England’s Coach in 2022 and he enjoyed the great start when England defeated New Zealand with 3-0, and defeated India in their fifth test match that was rescheduled from a series. Although, his start against those teams became his failure against those teams that led his departure as test coach. He faced continuously defeats against India, Australia, and New Zealand.
