In a significant political development, the rebel Trinamool Congress (TMC) MPs, now recognised as members of the NCPI, will for the first time participate in the NDA Parliamentary Party meeting on Tuesday, marking their formal integration into the NDA’s parliamentary functioning.
Senior MPs including Sudeep Bandopadhyay, Kakoli Ghosh and other NCPI members are expected to attend the meeting, which will be addressed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
First NDA Meeting For TMC Rebels
Traditionally, the BJP held a Parliamentary Party meeting every Tuesday during Parliament sessions. However, since the formation of the NDA government in 2024 under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, these meetings have been expanded to include all NDA Members of Parliament.
The weekly meeting has recently been renamed “Mangal Milan”—a reference to Tuesday (“Mangal” in Hindi). Party leaders also describe the name as symbolic, with “Mangal” denoting an auspicious beginning and a positive spirit of collective engagement within the alliance.
The participation of the former TMC MPs assumes significance as it comes only after the NCPI secured separate parliamentary recognition. Although the party had attended the government’s all-party meeting at the start of the Monsoon Session, its MPs did not participate in last week’s NDA Parliamentary Party meeting as the formal recognition process had not been completed.
NCPI MPs Allotted Separate Seating Block In Parliament
With recognition now in place, the NCPI MPs have also been allotted a separate seating block in Parliament, distinct from the Trinamool Congress benches led by Abhishek Banerjee.
Tuesday’s meeting will also be the first opportunity for the newly inducted NCPI MPs to hear Prime Minister Modi in a closed-door parliamentary interaction. Until now, they had only listened to him during proceedings in Parliament or at public political rallies.
The NDA Parliamentary Party meetings have increasingly become an important platform for the Prime Minister to communicate the government’s priorities and expectations from its MPs. During the previous meeting, Prime Minister Modi highlighted the government’s measures to curb examination malpractice following the NEET controversy, stressing that the investigation was progressing rapidly and that the CBI had already arrested several accused.
The Prime Minister also underscored the importance of the youth in India’s development journey, urging MPs to play an active role in guiding young people and preventing them from being misled. In earlier meetings, he has repeatedly emphasised the responsibility of Members of Parliament to come well-prepared for debates, actively participate in parliamentary discussions, and maintain regular attendance in the House.
The presence of the NCPI MPs at Tuesday’s meeting is being viewed as another visible step in their transition from the Opposition to becoming an integral part of the NDA’s parliamentary fold.
