The BJP is sharpening its focus on India’s Gen-Z voters, with party president Nitin Nabin convening a high-level meeting of leaders with a proven connect among young people as the party seeks to decode their aspirations, anxieties and evolving political mood.

The meeting, scheduled for August 29 at 10 AM at the BJP headquarters, is being held on National Sports Day, adding an interesting backdrop to what is being seen within the party as a renewed push to engage the country’s youngest voters.

Around 45 BJP leaders from across the country, roughly two to three from each state, have been invited for the meeting. The list cuts across generations and organisational experience and includes Union ministers, MPs, former MPs, former ministers, MLAs and state ministers.

The common thread is their ability to connect with young voters, understand youth issues or influence youth opinion.

Among those invited are former Union ministers Anurag Thakur and Kamlesh Paswan, Gorakhpur MP Ravi Kishan and newly inducted BJP general secretary Harish Dwivedi.

The party has also reached out to leaders who, in their earlier political avatars, played a prominent role in BJP’s youth politics before moving into broader state or national roles. These include Poonam Mahajan, Tejasvi Surya and Pankaja Munde. Young leaders such as Darjeeling MP Raju Bista and Union Minister of State Raksha Khadse have also been asked to participate.

Ravi Kishan’s Gen-Z connect catches BJP’s eye

The inclusion of Ravi Kishan is particularly significant. The BJP believes that some of its leaders possess an organic cultural connect with Gen Z that conventional political communication cannot manufacture.

Kishan has emerged as a notable example. Following the recent CJP-led student protests, clips from his old films, dialogues and dance moves have found renewed traction among young users, with several being repurposed into memes and social media content.

For the BJP, such moments offer an opportunity to take political communication beyond traditional speeches and campaign material.

The party’s larger objective is to identify leaders who can speak the language of young Indians on the platforms where they actually consume political and cultural content.

The meeting is therefore expected to go beyond a routine discussion on the party’s youth wing. It is likely to examine what is driving young voters, the issues shaping their political choices and how the BJP can build a more effective communication strategy around them.

From organisational restructuring to social-media push

The meeting also comes at a significant moment for the BJP organisation.

It follows the recent restructuring of the party and comes amid a renewed emphasis on direct engagement with young Indians through social media.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has recently stressed the need for the government and party to strengthen their outreach to youngsters through digital platforms. This was followed by a social-media audit of Union ministers, aimed at assessing how effectively members of the government are communicating online.

The BJP’s organisational machinery is also being strengthened on the digital front.

Sources in the party say its social-media cell is currently on a hiring spree under its new chief Deepak Mhaske, with an emphasis on expanding the party’s ability to communicate with younger audiences across digital platforms.

The focus on Gen Z is significant for a party that has traditionally enjoyed a strong youth connect but now faces a rapidly changing digital and political environment.

Young voters are increasingly consuming politics through short-form video, memes, influencers and issue-based online communities rather than through conventional political messaging.

For the BJP, the challenge is consequently not merely to reach Gen Z, but to become culturally relevant to it.

Nabin’s August 29 meeting could be an early indication of how the BJP intends to approach that challenge: identify its most effective youth-facing political voices, understand what resonates with young Indians and build an organisational and digital strategy around that insight.

And with the meeting falling on National Sports Day, the BJP’s message appears clear: the political contest for India’s youngest voters is already underway.

The BJP’s ‘Mission Gen Z’ aims to reconnect with young voters, especially after issues like the NEET paper leak and rising unemployment caused a disconnect. The party plans to engage with Gen Z through social media, with Prime Minister Modi himself creating Instagram Reels.

The BJP plans to engage with youth by using their preferred social media platforms and creating content tailored to their language and interests. This includes using platforms like Instagram for Gen Z, while Facebook might be used for other generations. The party aims to use innovative content, new communication formats, and strategies specifically designed for younger audiences.

The meeting could indicate the BJP’s intention to identify effective youth-facing political voices, understand what resonates with young Indians, and build an organisational and digital strategy around these insights.
