After years of addiction and homelessness, he was found beneath an I-40 overpass in Oklahoma City weighing just 92 pounds, according to recovery organisation Hope Is Alive. Officers initially planned to book him on outstanding warrants, but his physical condition was so severe that he was taken to hospital instead. Doctors worked to save his life and his hand, which had been badly affected by an infection linked to intravenous heroin use. What followed was a dramatic turnaround. Ellerd entered recovery, rebuilt his life and eventually returned to education. He went on to study at Oklahoma State University-Oklahoma City, where he earned two associate degrees and maintained a perfect 4.0 GPA. His transformation later extended beyond his own recovery, as he began working with and supporting people experiencing homelessness and addiction.
Addiction left him homeless and weighing just 92 pounds

At one point, his father reportedly saw people holding signs on Oklahoma City streets before realising that one of them was his own son. Ellerd later described his life during addiction as one marked by hopelessness and a belief that he had no way out. His circumstances would soon reach an even more dangerous point when officers encountered him beneath an I-40 overpass.

He entered a structured recovery programme through Hope Is Alive and began working to rebuild the stability that addiction had taken from him. The organisation says recovery gave him structure, accountability and support as he worked to establish a new life. His transformation also became increasingly connected to helping others facing similar circumstances. He became involved in recovery support and eventually worked with organisations serving people experiencing homelessness. Oklahoma State University later highlighted his commitment to service, noting that his own experiences with addiction and homelessness had shaped his desire to empower others. By the time he was studying at OSU-OKC, Ellerd was balancing education with work and service. He was working as a Shelter Advocate for City Care, supporting people experiencing homelessness, while also volunteering with Hope Is Alive Ministries and sponsoring men in recovery. His past had become a source of motivation to help people who were still struggling.
He went back to college and earned a 4.0 GPA
Education became another major part of Ellerd’s transformation. He enrolled at Oklahoma State University-Oklahoma City and studied Computer Information Systems while managing work and other responsibilities. In 2023, he was selected for Cohort 4 of OSU-OKC’s Center for Social Innovation. At the time, accounts from the centre described him as simultaneously working part-time, managing a recovery home and attending college full-time. Despite those demands, he maintained a 4.0 GPA. The university later recognised Ellerd as a 2025 Women for OSU Scholar, citing his academic performance, leadership and community involvement. He participated in the President’s Leadership Class, the Things That Matter Club and Phi Theta Kappa. His academic achievements culminated in two associate degrees. Ellerd earned an Associate in Applied Science in Computer Information Systems and an Associate in Science in Enterprise Development, completing his studies with a perfect 4.0 GPA.
From homelessness to helping others find hope
Ellerd’s transformation did not end with his graduation. His experiences with addiction and homelessness became central to his efforts to support others going through similar struggles. He worked as a Shelter Advocate for City Care and remained involved in recovery support, helping people who were facing circumstances similar to those he had once endured. He also turned his experience into a book titled Recovery Is Possible: The Story of My Journey Through Addiction and Into Recovery. He later launched a campaign aimed at distributing 1,000 copies of the book free to homeless people and people struggling with addiction who could not afford it. His journey therefore came full circle. The man who was once found beneath an Oklahoma City overpass weighing just 92 pounds had gone on to rebuild his life, return to college, graduate with two degrees and a 4.0 GPA, and dedicate part of his life to helping others find a way out of homelessness and addiction.
