The Indian footwear market is evolving rapidly. Consumers are exploring new styles, moving between categories, shopping across multiple channels and looking for products that combine fashion, comfort and value. For footwear brands, responding to these shifts requires more than seasonal collections or new campaigns. It calls for sharper product choices, a stronger understanding of regional markets and a retail experience that meets consumers where they are.

Bata India is addressing these shifts through a combination of premiumisation, product development, retail expansion and more targeted consumer engagement. From strengthening its design capabilities globally to developing market-specific campaigns across India, the focus is on making the brand’s products more relevant to changing consumer preferences.

Bringing product and design closer to the consumer

Product and design are becoming increasingly important to how footwear brands compete. As consumers seek more contemporary styles, brands need to respond to changing trends while ensuring that comfort remains central to the product experience.

Bata’s global initiatives include the development of Bata Works in Amsterdam, a centre intended to strengthen the Group’s focus on brand, product and design. During his India visit, Panos Mytaros, CEO of Bata Group expressed “Our strategy is called Re-ignite. We are putting brand and product at the heart of Bata, with big ambitions for growth. To bring this to life, we are establishing Bata Works, our international centre for brand, product and design, in Amsterdam – a city where cultures, ideas and talent come together. Bata Works will work closely with our teams in the countries where we operate, especially India. I want the products we create in India to inspire what we create for the world. Local ideas are a real strength of Bata and something that sets us apart from many other brands.”

In India, this direction complements Bata’s focus on premiumisation. The objective is to offer consumers a wider and more relevant range of footwear, spanning contemporary fashion, sneakers, athleisure and comfort-led styles. With brands such as Hush Puppies, Power, NorthStar, Floatz and Comfit addressing different consumer needs, Bata is working across categories to meet evolving expectations around design, functionality and everyday wear.

Regional markets require a more local approach

India’s footwear market is not defined by a single consumer profile. Preferences differ across regions, influenced by local cultures, occasions, weather, fashion choices and shopping habits. Bata’s regional campaigns reflect an effort to build stronger connections with consumers by adapting its product proposition and communication to local contexts.

In Kerala, Bata launched a dedicated Onam campaign featuring Malayalam actor Anishma Anil Kumar. The campaign brought together contemporary footwear, comfort and the spirit of Onam, with a focus on younger consumers and the way they celebrate the festival.

The initiative also reflects the importance of South India to Bata’s growth plans. Kerala is an important growth market for the brand, and Bata plans to add more than 100 stores across South India through a mix of company-owned and franchise-led formats. The expansion is aimed at improving accessibility while strengthening the brand’s reach across the region.

In West Bengal, Bata’s ‘Comfort is the Occasion’ campaign features Bengali actress Ritabhari Chakraborty. With West Bengal contributing approximately 10–12% to Bata India’s overall business, the state remains an important market, particularly during Pujo.

The campaign recognises the many occasions that define the festival, from pandal hopping and family gatherings to festive lunches and evenings out with friends. Its footwear proposition combines contemporary styles with comfort for consumers navigating long days and nights of celebrations. Bata expects its festive sales in West Bengal to grow by double digits this Pujo, supported by consumer engagement, a refreshed assortment and its retail presence across the region.

These initiatives demonstrate how regional marketing can go beyond adapting a campaign’s language or imagery. By connecting product choices and communication to local occasions, Bata can make its offering more relevant to consumers in individual markets.

Taking the festive proposition across India

As the festive season moves towards Diwali, Bata is extending its consumer engagement through its national campaign, ‘Comfort, but make it festive’, featuring Rakul Preet Singh.

The campaign is built around a simple consumer insight: festive celebrations involve long days, multiple plans and plenty of time on one’s feet. Shopping, getting ready, meeting family, hosting guests and attending parties can make the season as demanding as it is enjoyable.

Bata’s proposition brings together festive style and comfort, positioning footwear as an essential part of the overall festive look. The campaign will be amplified across film, television, print, outdoor, connected TV, digital channels and Bata stores. It also extends into consumer engagement through a social media contest offering Bata hampers.

The focus is on connecting the brand’s product proposition with how consumers experience the season, rather than limiting festive communication to a collection launch or an advertising campaign.

Connecting product, availability and experience

Alongside product development and marketing, retail readiness remains an important part of delivering on consumer expectations. As shopping journeys move between stores, brand websites, marketplaces and other digital channels, product availability and convenience play an increasingly important role in the purchase decision.

For Bata, this means aligning its assortment and inventory planning with consumer demand, while ensuring that shoppers can access the products they want through the channels they prefer. Its retail network and omnichannel presence provide the foundation to serve consumers across markets, while targeted campaigns help build awareness around relevant products and occasions.

The opportunity lies in bringing these efforts together. Product and design create the proposition; regional understanding makes it relevant; marketing helps consumers discover it; and retail availability completes the experience.

Across its global product initiatives, premiumisation efforts, South India expansion and campaigns for Onam, Pujo and Diwali, Bata is working on these different aspects of the consumer journey. The focus is on strengthening its product offering, reaching more consumers and responding to the way footwear preferences are changing across India.

Ultimately, growth in the footwear market will depend on how effectively brands connect what they offer with what consumers want. For Bata India, the current set of initiatives reflects a clear direction: build a more contemporary product proposition, deepen regional relevance and make the shopping experience more responsive to today’s consumer.
