The Supreme Court on Tuesday sought responses from the Centre and others on a plea filed by traders’ organisations seeking a halt to the ongoing protests against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar during the festive season. The court observed that a designated protest site cannot be occupied indefinitely, while underscoring that everyone has a right to protest.A bench comprising Chief Justice of India Surya Kant and Justices Joymalya Bagchi and V Mohana was hearing a batch of petitions concerning the protests, including allegations of mass detentions, police brutality, arbitrary closure of Metro stations and internet shutdowns. The plea filed by the Kirana Committee Delhi alleged that the protests at Ramlila Maidan had affected business activities in the surrounding areas.Appearing for the traders’ organisations, senior advocate Mukul Rohatgi told the court that nearly 50 lakh people live in areas surrounding the protest site and that shops were remaining closed, affecting business during the festive season. n18oc_indian18oc_politicsn18oc_plain-speakNews18 Mobile App – https://onelink.to/desc-youtub
