The suspected killer of Brian Thompson,26-year-old Luigi Mangione is against capitalism and his brazen murder is a protest against the health insurance companies. But as more and more details emerge about Luigi Mangione’s family, it’s evident that his family wealth is more than that of Brian Thompson as Mangione’s late grandfather Nicholas Mangione owned country clubs, nursing homes and radio stations.
Luigi’s late grandfather Nicholas Mangione was a multimillionaire real-estate developer who owned country clubs, nursing homes and radio stations. He and his wife Mary Mangione bought Turf Valley Country Club in 1978 with a bank loan and about $750,000 of his own money. The property over the years converted into Howard County’s full-service resort and conference center, with a 220-room hotel, a pro shop, a 10,000 square foot ballroom, a European-style spa, an 85-seat amphitheater and a fitness center. They also bought another club, founded a nursing home and an assisted living company called Lorien Health Services.
Mangione has a long-harbored angst against the healthcare industry but his family has a long association with it as they supported many hospitals and medical units.
Brian Thompson, on the other hand, worked at United Healthcare for over 20 years receiving his salary from the company and it was only in 2021 that he became the CEO of the company with an annual compensation of $10.2 million.
Mangione attended top schools, colleges and then the University of Pennsylvania indicating that he never faced a dearth of money in his life. His mother Kathleen Zannino Mangione owns a boutique travel company and his sister MariaSanta Mangione is a doctor.
The family said they were shocked and devastated by Luigi’s arrest and were not aware of anything. The family could not get in touch with Luigi for some days and his mother reported him missing November 18. “Our family is shocked and devastated by Luigi’s arrest,” the family said in a statement shared by his cousin Nino Mangione, a Republican Baltimore County delegate, late Monday. “We offer our prayers to the family of Brian Thompson and we ask people to pray for all involved. We are devastated by this news,” the Mangione family said.
