Delhi Assembly Election 2025: Eight Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLAs resigned from the primary membership of the party just five days ahead of the Delhi Assembly elections.
In what could be seen as a major blow to Delhi’s ruling party, Palam MLA Bhawna Gaur sent a letter to AAP national convenor Arvind Kejriwal, stating that she was resigning due to a loss of faith in both him and the party.
“I hereby resign from the primary membership of the Aam Aadmi Party as I have lost faith in you and the party. Please accept the same,” Bhawna Gaur expressed in the letter.
Besides Gaur, the other seven sitting MLAs who resigned from the AAP are Naresh Yadav from Mehrauli, Rajesh Rishi from Janakpuri, Madan Lal from Kasturba Nagar, Rohit Mehrauliya from Trilokpuri, B.S. June from Bijwasan, Pawan Sharma from Adarsh Nagar and Girish Soni from Madipur.
Notably, the move came after the seven sitting MLAs were denied AAP’s ticket for the upcoming Delhi elections, scheduled to be held on February 5.
Naresh Yadav, who had been chosen as AAP’s candidate for the Mehrauli seat, was convicted by a Punjab court in December for his involvement in a Quran desecration case and sentenced to two years in prison.
When AAP released its fifth list of candidates for the Delhi election, Mahender Chaudhary was named as the new Mehrauli candidate, replacing Naresh Yadav.
Similarly, the AAP has fielded new faces in the other seven seats. As per the party’s candidates’ list, it has nominated Mukesh Goel from Adarsh Nagar, Pravin Kumar from Janakpuri, Surendra Bhardwaj from Bijwasan, Joginder Solanki from Palam, Ramesh Pehlwan from Kasturba Nagar, Anjana Parcha from Trilokpuri and Rakhi Bidlan from Madipur.
The Delhi polls are scheduled for February 5 and the results will be announced on February 8. A total of 699 candidates are competing for the 70 assembly seats in Delhi.
