Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla and owner of X, has reportedly been sleeping at the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) headquarters in Washington, according to WIRED. Located inside the Eisenhower Executive Office Building—just steps away from the White House—the DOGE office has become Musk’s latest makeshift home.
At a recent Alfalfa Club black-tie dinner, Musk claimed he had been invited to stay at the White House’s historic Lincoln Bedroom. However, the billionaire chose DOGE headquarters instead.
The ‘sleeping-on-the-floor’ mentality
Musk is no stranger to extreme work habits. During Tesla’s early struggles, he famously slept on the factory floor, believing it demonstrated leadership.
“This is important because if the team thinks their leader is off somewhere having a good time, drinking Mai Tais on a tropical island… they knew I was there, and that made a huge difference,” Musk said in a 2022 interview with Ron Baron.
The same mindset drove his takeover of Twitter (now X). After acquiring the platform in 2022, Musk sent employees a memo titled “A Fork in the Road,” warning that only those ready for intense hours would survive. The ultimatum led to the departure of 80% of Twitter’s workforce.
Musk tightens his grip on Washington
His latest move—literally setting up camp at a government office—signals Musk’s deepening influence in federal operations. With DOGE’s mission centered on streamlining government efficiency, his presence could indicate an even greater push for control.
Is Musk’s decision to sleep at DOGE headquarters a power move, a symbolic gesture, or just another case of his notorious workaholic tendencies? One thing is clear: When Elon Musk wants something done, he doesn’t clock out.
