US federal agents have apprehended a suspect in connection with last month’s car bombing at a fertility clinic in Palm Springs, California, according to statements from three law enforcement officials on Wednesday.Daniel Park, 32, of Kent, Washington, was taken into custody Tuesday evening at New York’s John F. Kennedy Airport. Authorities have yet to disclose the specific charges against him or the extent of his involvement, according to the Associated Press report. The FBI previously identified Guy Edward Bartkus as the individual who died in the explosion. Investigators are probing whether Bartkus had any accomplices in planning or executing the attack.Prosecutors in Los Angeles are expected to release further details during an upcoming press conference. NBC News was the first to report the arrest. The law enforcement officials who confirmed Park’s detention spoke on condition of anonymity, citing lack of authorisation to discuss the sealed case.Bartkus was reportedly affiliated with the anti-natalist movement, which opposes human reproduction and population growth. According to the FBI, he deliberately targeted the clinic in what has been characterised as a terrorist act. Investigators believe Bartkus attempted, but failed, to livestream the explosion. The powerful blast demolished the American Reproductive Centers facility and caused damage to adjacent buildings. Witnesses described hearing a massive explosion followed by scenes of chaos and confusion. Law enforcement officers discovered a body near a charred vehicle outside the clinic, later identified as Bartkus.Authorities continue to investigate Bartkus’s motives, including why he selected this specific location, and whether his death was an intentional part of the attack. The targeted clinic offers a range of fertility services, including in vitro fertilisation (IVF) and reproductive health assessments.Searches conducted at Bartkus’s home in Twentynine Palms, a desert town with a notable Marine Corps base, have so far not revealed the origin of the explosives used. Officials have withheld details about the type of explosives and how they were acquired.A senior FBI official described the incident as potentially the “largest bombing scene that we’ve had in Southern California.”Former ATF explosives expert Scott Sweetow, commenting on the case, said the extent of the damage suggested the use of high-grade materials, possibly dynamite or TNT, rather than more accessible substances like gunpowder. “Once you know the chemistry involved, it’s pretty easy to get stuff,” Sweetow explained. “The ingredients you could get at a grocery store.”He added that the blast pattern- spanning the street, building, and parking area- may have been either a deliberate design or an unintended consequence. Vehicle fragments were reportedly hurled through the structure, eventually landing near a waste container.
