'Two big nuclear powers avoided war': Donald Trump on meeting with Asim Munir; says trade talks on with India, Pakistan

US President Donald Trump has revealed the reason behind his meeting with Pakistan Army Chief General Asim Munir, saying, “I wanted to thank him for not going into the war and ending it.”“Reason I had him here was I wanted to thank him for not going into the war and ending it,” Trump told reporters during an address in Washington, DC.Trump also highlighted recent diplomatic engagements with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, emphasising efforts to secure trade deals with both countries.“Prime Minister Modi just left a little while ago and we are working a trade deal with India and also with Pakistan… I am so happy. Two very smart people decided not to keep going with the war. Those are two big nuclear powers,” he added.Trump’s remarks came after Asim Munir was invited to the White House for lunch. The lunch invitation came after Munir, according to a White House official, called for Trump to be nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize for preventing a nuclear war between India & Pakistan.Trump earlier reiterated his stance about preventing warfare between India and Pakistan, despite Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s earlier clarification that the May ceasefire resulted from bilateral military discussions, not US intervention. “Well, I stopped a war between Pakistan. I love Pakistan. I think Modi is a fantastic man. I spoke to him last night. We’re going to make a trade deal with Modi of India. But I stopped the war between Pakistan and India. This man (Pakistani army chief of staff) was extremely influential in stopping it, from the Pakistan side. Modi, from the India side, others. And they were going at it. And they’re both nuclear countries. I got it stopped,” Trump rambled on the sidelines of a White House event on Wednesday.
