Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Saturday stressed the importance of verbal restraint among BJP leaders, stating that “restraint in speech is the most important virtue” and that “sometimes, it is wiser to stay silent.”

Shah made the remarks during his keynote address at a three-day BJP training camp, which he inaugurated on Saturday, in Pachmarhi—a hill station in Madhya Pradesh’s Narmadapuram district—organised for the party’s public representatives and functionaries.

His comments came against the backdrop of a controversy involving BJP leader and state minister Vijay Shah, whose remarks about Colonel Sofiya Qureshi—part of the team handling media briefings on Operation Sindoor—had sparked public outrage. The minister later issued multiple apologies.

“Mistakes happen but they must not be repeated,” Shah said, in what was widely seen as a reference to Vijay Shah’s statement. He further urged party leaders to stay grounded, saying, “No matter how senior or experienced one becomes, they must always remain a student.”

Echoing similar sentiments, Union Environment Minister Bhupendra Yadav warned against overreaction and the dangers of speaking without restraint, NDTV reported.

“Ninety percent of political harm comes from reacting to everything. Sometimes it is wiser to stay silent,” Yadav said.

“In politics, restraint in speech is the most important virtue, especially in an era where every word is amplified,” he added, calling on leaders to think carefully before making public statements and to uphold the dignity of their roles.

MP Cabinet Minister Karan Verma confirmed that Shah’s remarks were directed at Vijay Shah’s recent controversy, noting that the Union Minister acknowledged that “mistakes can happen to anyone” but stressed that “repetition is unacceptable.”
