The BJP on Tuesday slammed senior Trinamool Congress (TMC) leaders, Madan Mitra and Manas Ranjan Bhunia, for their remarks on the alleged gangrape of a law student in Kolkata, accusing the party of “institutionalising misogyny”.

BJP IT Cell chief Amit Malviya took to X to criticise TMC leaders, accusing Mitra and Bhunia of showing “mockery, dismissal, and absolute cruelty”.

“As the entire nation reels in horror over the unspeakable brutality inflicted upon the 24-year-old law aspirant, TMC leaders are busy normalising rape to earn brownie points from their political boss — Mamata Banerjee,” Malviya wrote.

Malviya accused both leaders of downplaying the incident, and slammed this pattern as proof that the TMC “has institutionalised misogyny”.

“This is Mamata Banerjee’s Bengal — Where a woman’s dignity is expendable, as long as the rapist chants the right political slogan,” he added.

Madan Mitra’s Comment

Madan Mitra, a senior TMC MLA, sparked outrage last week when he suggested that the incident might not have happened if the victim had not gone to college alone.

“If the girl hadn’t gone there alone, this wouldn’t have happened. She should have taken friends, informed her parents, or notified party workers. The accused took advantage of the situation,” he said. He also claimed the student knew the college was closed, but went hoping to be made the girls’ common room secretary.

On Monday, Mitra submitted an unconditional apology to TMC leadership in response to a show-cause notice from state president Subrata Bakshi. He expressed regret for his “uncalled for and insensitive” remarks and sought to explain the context in which they were made. The party is currently reviewing his response and may decide on further penalties.

Manas Bhunia’s Comment

Meanwhile, West Bengal Irrigation Minister Manas Ranjan Bhunia came under fire after referring to the Kolkata rape case as a “small incident”. He later clarified that his comments had been twisted by the media.

“I would like to clarify that my previous comments were not related to the Kasba incident. They have been misrepresented and linked to the unfortunate incident in an attempt to malign and defame me. I reiterate — I strongly condemn this incident,” Bhunia stated.

Bhunia claimed he was speaking generally about incidents in the state, citing other crimes like the RG Kar University rape and a tourist massacre in Jammu & Kashmir to illustrate his point that in Bengal, even minor crimes tend to be exaggerated.
