Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Monday made a significant political announcement, confirming that the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) will contest the upcoming Bihar Assembly elections. The declaration was made during his visit to Gujarat, underscoring the party’s ambitions to broaden its national footprint.
Speaking at a press conference held in Delhi on Thursday, Kejriwal also clarified that AAP has no alliance with the Congress party. He emphasised that the INDIA alliance was formed specifically for the Lok Sabha elections.
“AAP will contest Bihar polls solo. INDIA bloc was only for Lok Sabha polls, no alliance with Congress now. If there was an alliance then why did Congress contest in Visavadar bypolls. They came to defeat us. BJP sent Congress to defeat us and cut the votes,” said AAP National Convenor Arvind Kejriwal.

Kejriwal stated that preparations are underway for AAP to make its electoral debut in Bihar, signalling a calculated move to challenge established regional players in the state. The foray into Bihar marks a continuation of the party’s strategy to expand beyond its traditional bases in Delhi and Punjab, following recent electoral experiments in Gujarat and Goa.
During the press conference, Kejriwal also mentioned that AAP will contest elections in Punjab and Gujarat and aims to form the government in both states. Recently, AAP secured victories in the Visavadar seat in Gujarat and Ludhiana West seat in Punjab during bypolls.
AAP’s defeat in the recent Delhi Assembly elections dealt a serious blow to the party, with top leaders including Arvind Kejriwal, Manish Sisodia, Satyendar Jain, and Saurabh Bharadwaj losing their seats. However, the party has since shown signs of revival with bypoll victories in Gujarat and Punjab, prompting efforts to regain political ground.
As Bihar braces for a tightly contested Assembly election between the NDA and Mahagathbandhan, Kejriwal’s move to enter the fray could alter the political calculus. With margins expected to be narrow, AAP’s presence may become a decisive factor in shaping the final outcome.
