After publicly endorsing Siddaramaiah’s announcement that he would remain Chief Minister for a full five-year term, Deputy CM DK Shivakumar on Monday said that aspirations of people wanting him to lead the state are not wrong.

The Karnataka Congress unit recently witnessed a major power tussle, with DK Shivakumar’s supporters voicing their demand for his elevation, citing a power-sharing agreement between him and Siddaramaiah.

“Workers, seers, and the public have their own desires; I can’t say their aspirations are wrong. We all built this party together; we are its disciplined soldiers. We sit together and follow what the party decides, even Siddaramaiah has said this many times,” Shivakumar said.

Shivakumar said that people have shown faith in the Congress and voted for it. “So we must live up to public expectations,” he added, asserting that the government has designed major programs for the people and will ensure their implementation.

Shivakumar made the remarks following a statement by Rambhapuri seer Sri Rajadeshikendra Shivacharya Swami, who said Shivakumar deserved “a higher position” after the 2023 election.

“People of the state are aware of his contribution to the party’s victory,” the seer had noted.

However, Shivakumar was quick to point out that party workers, functionaries, opposition leaders, and even the media continue to “unnecessarily” discuss the issue.

Earlier, putting an end to speculation about a change in leadership, Shivakumar had endorsed Siddaramaiah’s statement, where the latter asserted that he would serve his full five-year term as Chief Minister.

“Yes, I’ll be there for 5 years. Why do you have doubts?” Siddaramaiah said when asked if he would step down to make way for Shivakumar.

Reacting to the CM’s remark, Shivakumar said, “What options do I have? I have to stand by him, support him (Siddaramaiah). I don’t have any objection to it. Whatever the party high command says and desires, it will be fulfilled.”
