“I think Ms Banerjee pulled the trigger” – this is what the late Ratan Tata, then Tata Group and Tata Motors chairman, had said when his company decided to move the Nano plant from West Bengal’s Singur to Gujarat. Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee had responded saying: “It is an unfortunate comment of an individual blaming me for the pullout decision at Singur.”

The 2006 protests against what Mamata Banerjee alleged was forced acquisition of farmland by Tata Motors, and then a similar agitation in Nandigram, may have catapulted her into power – it was a milestone in Bengal’s political journey as it ended 34 years of CPI(M) rule.

None of that, however, was echoed in Banerjee’s meeting with Tata Sons and Tata Motors Chairman N Chandrasekaran on Wednesday – almost two decades since the protests and for the first time since she became chief minister in 2011.

Banerjee had a fruitful meeting with Chandrasekaran at Nabanna State Secretariat in Howrah, primarily focused on West Bengal’s industrial prospects and opportunities.

“The meeting reflected Bengal’s commitment to fostering meaningful public-private partnerships that drive innovation, investment, and inclusive development, ” said the TMC, sharing the announcement about the meeting on its official X account.

“Smt. @MamataOfficial hosted Shri Natarajan Chandrasekaran, Chairman of Tata Sons and the Tata Group, for a constructive dialogue on Bengal’s industrial growth and emerging opportunities. The meeting reflected Bengal’s commitment to fostering meaningful public-private partnerships that drive innovation, investment, and inclusive development,” it posted.

Earlier this year, at the Bengal Global Business Summit, Banerjee said she had spoken Chandrasekaran over the phone and he had told her that he was interested in investing in the state.

Chief Secretary Manoj Pant was also present at the meeting. According to an official in the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO), discussions were held about investment opportunities in the state.
