Anti-ICE protester pulls gun on federal agent as netizens slam Gavin Newsom for inaction

A tense and violent standoff erupted during a federal immigration raid at a cannabis farm in Camarillo, California, when an anti-ICE protester allegedly brandished a firearm at federal agents. The shocking incident, part of a broader immigration enforcement sweep, has triggered a wave of outrage on social media. With tensions already running high over mass deportation operations across the state, the confrontation has placed renewed pressure on California Governor Gavin Newsom. Netizens are accusing Newsom of remaining silent in the face of escalating violence, particularly after reports emerged that assaults on ICE agents have surged by nearly 700% compared to the previous year.

Armed confrontation with federal agents sparks FBI manhunt

The federal raid targeted a large-scale cannabis facility in Southern California believed to be employing undocumented workers. As agents conducted their operation, a protester reportedly drew a gun, causing an immediate response from federal officers. Crowd control measures, including tear gas, were deployed as tensions with demonstrators intensified. Several arrests were made, and one person was pinned to the ground. The FBI has launched a manhunt for the armed suspect and is offering a reward for information leading to an arrest.

Governor Newsom under fire as assaults on ICE agents rise

Following the incident, prominent social media accounts such as Libs of TikTok amplified the outrage, calling out Governor Newsom by name and demanding a firm response. Many online users expressed anger over what they see as Newsom’s lack of leadership amid the growing violence against federal agents. According to the Department of Homeland Security, there have been 79 reported assaults on ICE agents so far this year—up from just 10 during the same period last year. Despite this, Newsom has continued to condemn the raids themselves as “inhumane,” placing blame on federal policies rather than addressing the attacks on law enforcement directly.

Gavin Newsom’s response and the Jan. 6 comparison

Amid mounting pressure to respond to the violent confrontation during the ICE raid, California Governor Gavin Newsom broke his silence with a sharp social media reply:“Of course I condemn any assault on law enforcement, you shit poster. Now do Jan 6.” His remark was aimed at conservative commentators accusing him of being soft on violence. Newsom invokes January 6—the day in 2021 when a mob of Trump supporters violently stormed the U.S. Capitol. With Donald Trump now back in the White House, Newsom’s reference to January 6 also served as a critique of what he sees as selective outrage.
