In a dramatic move, legislators of the Opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) on Wednesday staged a ‘lungi, baniyan’ protest outside the Maharashtra Assembly to protest against the assault on the hostel canteen employee by Shiv Sena MLA Sanjay Gaikwad. The ppposition leader are also demanding the government to take action on the incident.

As per the videos circulating online, leaders including Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balahasaheb Thackeray) MLC Ambadas Danve and NCP(SP) leader Jitendra Awhad, among others, can be seen wearing ‘baniyans’ and towels as ‘lungi’ over their usual attire.

In addition to this, the leaders were also heard raising slogans against the ‘gooda raj’ of the ruling alliance.

“The assault by Gaikwad in the MLA canteen shows that even the government is backing such elements,” Leader of Opposition in the state legislative council Ambadas Danve said.

The Opposition’s move days after Shiv Sena leader 9Shinde faction) Sanjay Gaikwad stroked a massive controversy after a video of him slapping the employee of the Akashvani MLA hostel at Churchgate surfaced on social media.

It was reported that the altercation began after Gaikwad ordered dinner from the canteen but found the dal and rice delivered in his room to be stale and foul-smelling. Angered by this, the leader stormed into the canteen and confronted the employee.

Following the heated argument, Gaikwad slapped the employee of the canteen. The video of the incident went viral on social media triggering massive criticism with the Opposition demanding action against the MLA.

Gaikwad, however, did not apologise for the incident and continued to defend himself. Despite widespread condemnation, including from his own party, Gaikwad said that he slapped the manager and not the staffer, terming it “right”.
