New Delhi: The International Gemological Institute (IGI) has reaffirmed its commitment to applying the universal 4Cs grading system – cut, color, clarity, and carat to all diamonds, including lab-grown, amid a shift by some players to alternate grading methods, according to a media release on Thursday.

“Since inception, IGI has remained steadfast in its mission as an independent, third-party authentication body – unbiased, and free from external influence,” the institute said in a statement. “Our commitment to transparency, integrity, and scientific accuracy has earned us the trust of consumers, manufacturers, and retailers around the world.”

IGI, which began grading lab-grown diamonds in 2005, said it chose to apply the 4Cs to both natural and lab-grown diamonds to maintain consistency and prevent confusion. “Every diamond we certify undergoes a rigorous 14-step grading process, carried out by expert gemologists using state-of-the-art equipment upholding accuracy, impartiality, and trust at every step,” as per a statement.

The institute added, “At IGI, we are not just grading diamonds – we are safeguarding the trust that consumers place in us.”

IGI operates 31 laboratories across 10 countries and holds ISO 17025 accreditation. It is audited by the Big Four and is a member of the Responsible Jewellery Council. IGI is also the only gemological laboratory listed on a stock exchange.

The Blackstone-backed institute holds a 50% market share in India’s diamond certification space.
